Custom Knife Sheath Maker

Post by jeepnik »

This little Randall is my current favorite. I carry it almost daily. But the sheath, to be generous, sucks. I don't need the itty bitty stone attached. And, the belt loop is so large and flexible that the knife flops around. Anyone know of a good sheath maker that can make something better?

This guy, Paul Patterson made a nice one for my old Cold Steel SRK.

Here's the one he made for me.

Tough to find sheaths that I personally like, and not pay huge prices. I personally prefer single side stiched sheaths, folded like a taco, and stitched down one edge. I bought a commercial sewing machine to sew up the upholstery on my old car projects, and planned to sell it later. But I kept it just so I could use it for leather repairs, holsters, and knife sheaths. If you do much of this a good used commercial sewing machine is something that can quickly pay for itself in money you save.

I still had the original and the knife in a box, he used it for a pattern. The nylon sheath fell apart about a month after I got it. I was in my twenties and CS was fairly new and still making their own knives in the US. I'd put it all in a box and forgot all about it until I found it cleaning out the garage a couple years ago. Paul was a client of mine and we started chatting about guns and knives. He took me out to his garage workshop to see what he did in his spare time.
Reminds me, I need to stop and see him next time I'm out that way. Maybe he can make something useful out of that El Paso holster.

Why not snip the stitches that hold the stone pocket, then stitch the over size loop tighter? A dremel tool will easily drill the holes you would need. Amazon has the basic leather working stuff cheap enough. Actually very easy to do.

I had Rob of Simply Rugged build me a custom sheath for the USMC KaBar knife my son gave me. Good, solid sheath. He's the first I contact for such projects.

I let Rob know that I want one of his sheaths for a Cold Steek SRK. He makes them in both a concealment model and a belt loop model. I'm going with the belt loop.

I could. I used to do leather work. But I know the limit of my ability. But mostly I really like custom leather. I’d probably scare myself if I added up what I’ve spent on holsters over the years

I have the same problem with a sheath for a Randall 2-7 "fighting stilleto" I bought recently. No problemo with the knife, love it, the leather sucks, I wouldn't let that little stone anywhere near the knife. I have a cabinet full of various stones i never use except for axes. I Use diamond stones and Japanese water stones with very perfect predictable results. Got a leather guy in Bandera, gonna try for a horizontal concealed carry, and maybe a suspender style upside down concealed rig too, for winter. The horizontal carry may be a stretch...its pretty big at 7" blade and .25" thick and 12" overall length.

Another vote for Simply Rugged, my every day snubby holster is the 4th or 6th they made for me and a new gift knife rides in a Simply Rugged sheath. I've been a customer of Robs for longer than my memory can recall!

I have to agree. If kydex was so good why haven't we ever seen a kydex cow.

Chance at Levergun Leather Works is my suggestion. He's made a couple of holster rigs for me.

I have several things from him. I looked at the sheaths on his site. Nothing hit me right. That’s why I started the thread.
