Re: What was the first gun you bought?
Welcome to the forum. My first firearm was a worn out "monkey tail" (rabo de macaco) muzzle loader of approximately 40 caliber.

Welcome to the fire.
Let's see........
My first guns, my dad bought me. A 94 carbine and a model 1400 20ga.
My first was a trade, actually. I traded a Rupp snowmobile for a 1939 S/42 Luger with a holster.
My first with a cash outlay, was a Colt New Frontier .22.
I still have the 94 and the Colt.

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
S&W model 10 was the first new handgun.
But my absolute first was a BHP. Cost me the princely sum of $25 for the pistol, shoulder holster, three mags and four boxes of ammo.
I was18 and bought from a pilot that was headed back to “The World”.

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
first one I bought, by mail, when I was maybe eleven, or something, was a 7mm Remington Rolling Block Carbine that looked like a veteran of the war in Mx. I sent a m.o. to the seller, and the mailman dropped off the gun at my door. It was a wonderfully straight shooter.

The first gun I bought was a second hand single barrel folding 12 gauge which as a kid I only used the heaviest shells I could find, learnt a thing or two about recoil..

I bought three guns from a widow years ago. The local "gun store" (in a corner inside the local Hardware Hank store) didn't want them and I had some cash saved up. A Remington 760 in 30-06, a Remington 5XX series bolt action 22 LR and a no-name 12 bore singleshot with the stock held on with cloth based "electrical tape". They all had ammunition with them and the 12 bore was accompanied by an almost full box of #4 buck in 3" shells. Nope, even as a dumb kid I didn't fire any of those in that shotgun. Used them up in a friend's Mossberg 500. Ended up giving that old gun to my brother. His now ex managed to get rid of it somehow, we never knew for sure how. It learned me plenty about recoil even without the 3" buck loads.

First gun I bought was a Ruger Bearcat. Local Bazaar store was closing out all firearms sales when the 1968 gun control act started, so they heavily discounted everything. I think it was under $30 if I recall correctly?

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
A day or two after I turned 18 I bought an 1892 Winchester in 32-20 along with a first gen Colt Single Action Army in 38-40. Funny thing as I was expecting paperwork but the guy just handed them to me, in spite of the Colt being made after 1898. Still have them.
By then I probably had 20-30 guns all straw purchased by my dad and older brother.----00

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
First year trying to hunt when I was 16 , with an old single shot (30" full choke) that would have been good for shooting coons up a tree. saved My hay money the next summer and bought a new Mossberg 500 12 ga with a modified choke. cost $80.00 . things turned around , targets started to break and I killed the first Ruffed Grouse that came up in front of Me . that was about forty shotguns ago. .
Re: What was the first gun you bought?
Not counting BB and pellet guns, I got a 93 Mauser 7mm mail order...no paperwork, it just showed up on the front step. 19 bucks if I recall correctly. I could find surplus ammo for a buck for 20.....I made that into a .22-250 and traded it for Marlin 39 Mountie...

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
The first gun that was mine, was a Savage model 24 that my Dad bought for me at Gambles hardware for my 14th birthday. The last birthday before he passed away.
The first gun that I purchased was a High Standard Double Nine that I bought from a local second hand dealer/pawn broker/fence/town character.
I shot it until it was so worn it would barely stay cocked in single action. Before I could get it repaired, someone stole it.

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
First gun that was "mine" was a Colt M16 A2 followed by a Colt 1911!
First purchased gun was a S&W Mod 686 4". I bought it while stationed in W. Germany in 1984. Wish I never got rid of it. It had a cool German import stamp on the frame. It was my first duty gun as a cop. I traded it in for a Sig P220.

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
My first was a brand new 1892 Rossi in .357 for IIRC $495. Great gun but I wanted a .22 so I traded the Rossi and $125 for a used .22 Chipmunk single shot. I never looked back.

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
First gun I bought was a 20 gauge side by side made in Brazil. My older Brother signed for it. He was 18 at the time. I put the money on the counter. The salesman never even looked surprised. I still have it, and it has killed quite a few pheasant. My next purchase was a Ruger Mark II .22 lr with a 6 inch tapered barrel. It has never failed. Accuracy is every bit as good as anything I have ever shot in a .22 lr. Better than most.

My first handgun was a single shot Savage model 101. I was 13 years old and didn't need my parents permission. I paid $15 for the Savage NIB and they threw in a box of SuperX 22 shells. Shot a lot of rabbits that summer.

I had been given several guns by my family by the time I was 16, but this was the first one I'd bought for myself. A 1959 ( if I remember right) Model 17, five screw. Paid $225 for it at a show. This is one I'll never part with.

Where's the upper sideplate screw? Does it have one in front of the trigger guard? Probably a 4 screw.
Re: What was the first gun you bought?
The first gun I bought was an old well used J.C. Higgins single shot bolt action .22 rifle for $40. (but I already owned a bunch of guns at that point)

Yes, I do. Thank you! I'm a real stickler when it comes to the fine 5 screws. Reminds me of a buddy who was an English teacher and if I spoke "out of tune" and used the wrong adverb, verb, or adjective, he was quick to correct me.

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
.
Older brother bought me a Ruger 10-22 when I was 12, to replace the bolt-action savage I had been shooting since age 4.
Mom bought me a Ruger Mk-1 semiauto pistol when I was 14 or so.
I saved up money in high school and a couple years later bought a Ruger M-77V in 6mm Remington and
my mom had to buy the Ruger Super Blackhawk with the rest of the money because I was only 18.
So I guess it was the 6mm bolt action.
Then a Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag I bought next when in college.
I had read Mel Tappan's "Survival Guns" and was determined to assemble a 10-gun 'battery' that would have handgun/rifle pairs.
Soon a Ruger P-85 and Ruger PC Carbine became a 'pair' to go with the Ruger 10-22/Mk1 pair and Marlin 1894/Super Blackhawk pair.

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
Pairs of long gun and pistol that use the same ammo have always been a good idea. A Ruger made Marlin 1894 in .357 would pair well with a good .357 Mag revolver for many purposes.AJMD429 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 11, 2021 9:36 am .

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
that's true but'cept manufacturers crippled the 44 magnum carbine with a ridiculous twist rate that would not stabilize heavy-for-caliber projectiles that are easily accommodated by 44 revolvers. I probably should have started with 44-40, but I didn't know it existed when I was feeding the home.

Re: What was the first gun you bought?
I bought all my guns and my first one was a Daisy pump BB gun. I could not stand the noisy, low velocity Red Ryder BB guns. Used $$ from my paper route and bought my own BBs too.
Next was my 22 rifle, this Winchester pump (also paper route $$). My grand son shooting the same rifle which I have kept all these years;
He grew up learning to shoot all the guns in the house that he could handle and now has a bigger buck than I ever took.
.
Maybe when he graduates college, I will take him to hunt Africa.
