A little shooting and time off at the cabin in PA

Post by 2ndovc »

Took the oldest kid, a couple of dogs and a couple of guns and headed out Friday.

It looked like the weather wasn't going to cooperate, it was warm but not too bad with a few thunderstorms here and there. Best part was there was no one around.

I had given our oldest my mom's .410 Mossberg for Christmas and it was the first time out with it. He's a disabled guy and has a hard time with more complicated things, but I thought he would take to this one pretty easily. Plus he loved my mom and was thrilled to have it.
He's a killer with his Savage MKII and turned out the Mossberg was just as easy for him after I showed him how it worked.

I put a new Marbles tang sight on the '73 and took the Bisley along too. Wanted to see if the Winchester would shoot close to the same POA as the Bisley with my Titegroup / 200 gr. LFN .45 Colt hand loads. At 25 yds they were right where I wanted them. I didn't get a picture of the targets, but I'll have them back out again and put them on the bench as well as stretch the '73 out to 100 yds.

Bandit was posing for the camera. Couldn't help it.

He did almost tangle with a porcupine though. He wanted out early Sunday AM and just as I'd clipped him to the dog run, he took off.
I was right behind him and put my M&P and light on the walk and there he was, ready for battle.
He started off as soon as he saw me and did a fantastic job of keeping himself between me and my truck so I couldn't put a couple 9mms in him.
i don't bother them out in the woods, but they are shoot on sight around the cabin, for obvious reasons.

That was about all the excitement we had. Good to have some down time.
The old place is going to be 100 years old in 2024. A little wear and tear but one of my favorite places in the world.

Glad you got out! I miss our old camp.
Nice pictures. Kids love that time spent and remember it forever.
Sure glad the pup didn't tie into that picky dog! They carried a bounty here for decades. My dad still shoots every one he sees. Last one I shot, was at our old camp.
My son was about 7, and we were sleeping late one night when 2 of them started chewing on a piece of plywood under the camp. I ran out with a flashlight and an M1 carbine, they scooted out the other side and I lit em up! Surprising what the little M1 did.
My kid never even woke up. He was mad I didn't wake him up when I told him at breakfast. :D
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

Quentin loves it up there, he's always asking when we're going again. Need to get him his own centerfire next. I was thinking one of the Henry single shot rifles, maybe in .30-30. I'll have to get one for his younger brother as well. I guess, I'll have to get one too. :D

I've blasted a ton of stuff with a .30 Carbine, nasty little round. Last porkypine, as my wife calls them, I nailed with .44 Magnum. Tough little buggers, first shot wasn't great and he started to get up again. A quick head shot ended the argument.

Excellent family story and background. So, how far away is your cabin from your residence ?

Thanks!

It's a little over a four hour drive without any traffic issues. We pass through Cleveland and Erie, PA so you never know.

The road our cabin is on winds through parts of the Allegheny Nat'l. Forest with a few acres of private property along the way. My dad bought the place in 1967. I try to get up there 3-4 times a year.

Jason, you are surely blessed. That cabin looks to be a wonderful retreat -- and to have your son and your dog along .. 8)

Thanks Bill!

Our company picked up a new insurance carrier and I've been getting a lot of claims in NE Ohio which puts me about half way there. Hopefully I can schedule some inspections out that way on a Friday and head up there for a day or two more often.
