My primitive bear

This is my first full primitive bear. Osage bow, hard maple shaft and obsidian point. He was just over 260#

49# at 29" (I draw it to 30 so ends up about 52#). And yes I made it. Its the only one of my selfbows I didnt sell.

that is awesome! so tell us if the stone hit any bone, i like a good story, i have picked up
alot of broken points in the past, i figured they was a miss?

It depends on the type of stone used on whether they fracture but even fractured tips rip and tear in unbelieveable fashions. Obsidian is not particularly durable against bone. Fossilized coral is fantastic for durability and edge retention. Chert and dacite is great too.

I also will.occassionally use trade points. These are made from the barrel band of an old whiskey barrel and then heat treated.

Beautifully done. I have always had a interest in primitive bows and arrows, but never took it as far as you have. I have killed deer with the old Bear Razor Head, without the bleeder blade. That was my go to head along with the old Black Diamond heads when using my recurve. I have made arrows out of hardwood dowels and I always fletch my own arrows. I have a long bow but not a self bow, also.

What did you make you arrow shafts out of? Those flint arrowheads are beautiful by the way. Lots of people don't realize just how effective the old bows and flint type heads were, and a 60 to 80 lb bow with a laser trajectory was not necessary either.

It varies, I like Forresters wood shafts, especially the hard maple but I also use bamboo and river cane (when I can get it).

Congratulations, on multiple jobs well done. I’ve never tried to make my own bow, only thought about it and looked at a book or two on the subject—bad habit of mine. The light English style bow I had cracked as my technique changed and I could draw a few more inches. I was never especially good at it, but the stares the younger crowd gave at the indoor range was amusing. They’d be flinging tiny groups with their compounds with sights and trigger releases, and I’d be using a stick and making what one would recognize as a group. My son was irked that his recurve with a centerline shelf gave him no better groups than my English style. I should get back into that…
