Remember the fallen.
Before the creation of "Memorial Day" in 1971 becoming a federal holiday observed the last Monday in May, it was known as "Decoration Day", observed 30 May each year (from 1868 to 1970).
In 1868, General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic called for a "Decoration Day" to honor Union soldiers who died in the Civil War. By 1890 all the former Northern states of the Union were celebrating it as a holiday. I can remember when the South still didn't celebrate Memorial Day, but as our country's brave men and women continued to "give the last full measure of devotion" to God and Country, in all the wars and actions since the Civil War - and with the South disproportionately sending their finest into all of our conflicts - Memorial Day and honoring our fallen brave is thankfully universal now.
May God Bless all who died for our precious freedoms. May God curse all who now strive to take them away.
Decoration Day

Re: Decoration Day
Since Memorial Day -- Decoration Day as it was once known -- is about and for those who made the Supreme Sacrifice, lest I forget those I served with in Echo Battery,12 Marines, July '65 - March '67:
PFC David L Felt , USMC, DOB 04/05/46, Sacramento, CA KIA 08/17/65
Lt. Peter Paul Domiano, USMC, DOB 10/18/43, Industry, NY KIA 07/01/66
PFC Billy Dean Nelson, USMC, DOB 06/30/47, Lommis, NE KIA 07/20/66
PCF Bradley Alan Pearson, USMC, DOB 11/27/46,Clear Lake, WI KIA 07/20/66
And most of all:
PFC John Alton Girod JR, USMC, DOB 06/14/44, Denham Springs, LA KIA 02/21/66
The German song "Ich hatte einen Kameraden" --"I had a comrade" is played on German Remembrance Day . Part of it goes:
A bullet flew towards us
meant for me or meant for you?
It took him away,
he lies beneath my feet
like a piece of myself.
In the case of Johnny, if it wasn’t for him, it would have hit me....

The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Ray, I never knew and will never know what men belonged to those names, not likely will anyone else reading the post. But I’m glad you posted them.
War sucks, but when war is necessary you have to win and the cost is terrible. I wish more of our young generation understood all this. Thankfully I think many do, at least the ones ‘we’ had a hand in raising...
