Book on the need for SheepDogs...
.
Anyone ever read "On Killing" by Dave Grossman...?
https://www.amazon.com/Killing-Psycholo ... 316040932/
Dan Bongino mentioned it today on his program and it sounded inspirational.

Re: Book on the need for SheepDogs...
It's on my bookshelf Doc, been too busy to read anything lately.
Re: Book on the need for SheepDogs...
When I was a LEO, Lt. Col. Grossman gave a lecture to our P.D.. I'm not into listening to speakers but he was very good. It was about the same time this book came out. It was the first time I heard of the sheepdog, sheep, and wolves anology.
Personally I haven't read a book in a long time but maybe I should start.

Re: Book on the need for SheepDogs...
Having been trained as a Sheepdog, I think that many of the former Sheepdogs might still be able to perform their duty to an extent that most sheep could never understand.

I say the sheep are an ungrateful lot who will turn on you in a heartbeat.
Screw the sheep.....wolves gotta eat too, same as buzzards.

Scott, not wanting to start anything. It seems to me that the sheep have turned on you a couple of times. Stay safe!

Re: Book on the need for SheepDogs...
Not me. I'm just watching what is happening out there. I'm watching good cops get crucified for being a sheep dog.
I'm seeing my Police Departments having to hire people they never used to consider because nobody in their right mind wants to be a cop these days.
I'm watching good men and women leave the profession in droves.
I don't think the sheep want to be saved from the wolves anymore.
Re: Book on the need for SheepDogs...
I am not a Cop, but I see it too often. There are a few bad Cops. Key word is "few". There are bad people in all professions. The trouble I see is that the Bad Politicians are in power and they, and the truly bad people, do not want laws enforced.

Re: Book on the need for SheepDogs...
It does seem that ‘sheepdogs’ recognize one another.
I’ve never earned a living as a sheepdog, but I think the protective-instinct or whatever is there; I have in a couple instances run towards danger instead of away, in order to protect others. Plus the nature of my job is a parallel mission to that of cops and clergy - to protect lives and comfort the suffering. I’m more likely to use a stethoscope in the process than a firearm or Bible, but I’m comfortable using all three.
There are men (and yes, I include the female gender too) who you know you can count on, whose word will be upheld without need for contracts, and who you trust to walk behind you with a loaded gun. Some are at that point before they’re old enough to shave, and sadly, some never get past the SnowFlake stage even as they age. I think the sheepdogs instinctively recognize one another though.
I read a study in a psychology journal many years ago that said that within a few seconds of walking into a crowded room, a woman will have ranked herself versus all of the other women as far as attractiveness (this was in the 1970’s when you could put truth like that to print), and that a man entering the same room will within a few seconds know which of the other men he could likely defeat in a physical confrontation. I think both are true. For me it is not just “who would I fear if a brawl broke out” (...well, in my 20’s and some of the places I went, maybe there was an element of that... ) but more of a “who could I count on to help if there was a fire, first-aid issue, bomb go off, or whatever”. Usually you can tell.

Re: Book on the need for SheepDogs...
sometime in the past history of this forum, or perhaps the marlin forum, IDK, but there was a good discussion along these lines and perhaps including that book, or perhaps before that, IDK. BUT someone might have fun reading that. I think it went on for some time.

Re: Book on the need for SheepDogs...
You mean there are other places like this on the Internet?
Re: Book on the need for SheepDogs...
there have been. Blaine and Fred and Jim (Bestlever) and Jayco and Sore Shoulder and others go back a couple of forums before we got to this one.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Mon May 24, 2021 1:29 pm You mean there are other places like this on the Internet?
