We worked on that cruddy looking model 9 on the right in the picture, it cleaned up pretty nice but i`m not going to get it running because it would cost another 50 bucks for a mantle and wick.

Too bad the durn mantle and wick are so spendy, Lenn. That did clean up nicely.

Looks good. Around the 1930s to 1940s that was common. Lots of kits were available back then for the conversion.

Very neat. Those LED ones that look like Edison Bulbs would not be out of place in it either. Even that cord looks good with it. It just looks right.

I'd like to see that one lit up at night. I have several of those lanterns and an old tub somewhere. I might try making something similar.

Cool idea.. I wonder if it can be seen much further away, could have been important when trying to get home in a blizzard late at night. I have read stories of travellers found frozen to death just yards from their cabins.

that looks great. i like that it blocks the side light which guards night vision.
but i've been in blizzards and fogs where that light would not carry far. car lights don't carry far in some conditions.
it is a very attractive thing and i wonder why i didn't think of it !

Looks as if it belongs in the 1800s.
I wonder if a piece of mirror of some sort behind it would make the light carry farther?

Paint inside would probably work to reflect more light out. Good idea Lenn. I bet that paint was used when they could get it back in the old days.

Those old wash tubs were useful for a lot of things. Even using one on the outside wall of a deer cabin with an old Coleman lantern would be useful. If you have the wash tub, but not a reflector for a Coleman, it should do well anyway.

Something i just learned about old lanterns, they made hot blast and cold blast models the hot blast being the older versions.
Cold blast is what you see the most which draw cold air through the side tubes to supply the flame with fresh air.
Hot blast like this Rayo no. 90 draws the hot air from the flame in and it circulates around the tubes and re-burns the gasses.
What i like about this lantern is when you lift the globe it swings off to the side for easier lighting.

'Not to be a know-it-all' but it is said that the hot blast was to be used 'inside/indoors' because of what you stated Pitchy. It re-burns the gases therefore it produces less odors. The more common Hurricane Lanterns were more for the outdoors or barn area because it was designed to shelter the wind. Learned this back several years ago.
I have 4 Hot blasts (3 old versions and 1 brand new) for the house when power goes out. Then several more of the common Hurricane. You can tell a difference even with kerosene. Can't imagine what burning old Coal oil was like.
Pitchy, I really like this thread and have been follow your new postings. I must say you are a luck man with your 'findings', I have always liked/wanted to have an Aladdin lamp just never found one that was workable. You are even more talented for -- building interesting old designs. Thanks for sharing, again,

here's my only operating oil lantern, Dietz Jupiter, 2.5L capacity. only improvement would be brass or stainless for seagoing uses.
1400 BTUs and 3.9 CP . it's only been lit to break in the wick. just hanging around . . . :)

Re: Coleman 530 pocket stove and 252 lantern, cool can opener added.
$50 for a mantle and wick? I didn't know we were living it up way back when... hadn't thought of an Aladdin mantle or wick in over a quarter of a century. Wish I'd thought to lay in a supply of them, they have done about as good as gold! Now I'm going to have to poke around here and see if they're still on the market here between the Canal and the Equator. We relied on those for our light clear up into the last quarter of the last century of the last millennium. And we kept them on hand along with kerosene for when the new fangled electricity went on the fritz, an all to common occurrence back then.

Yep it`s terrible and they don`t hold up well either, they say the old ones were better.
I think the round wick lamps are better but they don`t give off as much light but i recon anything is better than nothing if ya don`t have any light.
A trip to the outhouse in total dark isn`t no fun at all.

it's the cheapest item in the catalog. [ ]did you see the camping lantern setup? that looks great. a good companion to the Kelly Kettle. which bit of kit works on top of a propane burner, or the kitchen hob, or in a sand box on deck . . . I wonder how the Kettle might work on top of a Jupiter lantern?
