FWIW - I'm hoping the best, for those folks effected by all the tornadoes occurring recently.
I'm sure the reason some forum members are absent, could be destroyed infrastructure - but I'm praying that all will come through OK, and in good health.
I've been out on "stormwatch" 5 times so far this year. Nothing severe yet, but there is still lots of season left. When the NWS came and gave us our yearly refresher training this year, we were told that they were expecting a higher than avereage year for storms.
We have also been notified that we are on standby for severe weather this afternoon and monday.
Republic. I like the sound of the word. It means people can live free, go or come, buy or sell, be drunk or sober, however they choose. Some words give you a feeling. Republic is one of those words that makes me tight in the throat . . . . Some words can give you a feeling that makes your heart warm. Republic is one of those words.
We've had three tornados hit our property in 25 years, but only one did much damage, and that was all to trees (it FLATTENED about 15 acres of 200+ year-old beech/sugar maple/shagbark hickory woods. We made trails through the blowdown, planted native fruit and nut trees, and have had wildlife like crazy, but it was frightening to see the flattened HOUSES all up and down the road.
A friend of mine builds houses with "Reward Wall Systems" which are basically tornado-proof except the siding will all blow off. You have to really work to make a tornado-proof roof, but even that can be done for extra expense. Even just having the walls tornado-proof protects occupants pretty well, but subsequent rain would ruin your interior if you had much roof loss.
We don't have a basement, even, so we hide in the pantry when the tornados are threatening.

early friday Am we had some hellacious straight line wind near the house for a few minutes,
Enough to split a tree near the house....good news is it missed the house.
Bad news... it landed on a nearly new Craftsman lawn tractor that was out overnight.
Scooted my 31 foot travel trailer off the jacks... no damage though
Rusty, that is some bad looking hail.I have been thinking about some of the folks out that way this weekend and prayed for them. Has any one heard from jengle in western Kansas? I know we got a lot out that way and Oklahoma too.
JerryB II Corinthians 3:17, Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
From the size of that tornado and the updraft it would have, that hail had to be tennis ball or larger in size.
Wouldn't have wanted to be the ones in the golf cart , they should have been heading toward where the video was being taken. I don't think the umbrellas would give them much protection.

The forecast is for more today.
There was a tornado near Moreno Valley,CA blew 32,000 # boxcars over & off of the tracks plus overturned a semi truck & trailer driving up the I 215.CA gets twisters every once in a while.
Stepmom lives in Riverside, near the naional cemetary and said a twister hit near the air museum.
That big one that hit in Windsor CO .,ended up traveling North and missed my Sisters house by about 300 yards. Took out some trees, but her neighbors house and horse sheds were not so lucky. She was in the house and said she heard a strange sound (freight train like) and the winds picked up real hard. She listens to Public Service radio only and said there wasn't a thing, but the way her dogs yap sometimes, she wouldn't hear it anyhow

Prayers sent. I think I will keep my wife from reading this one she is already scared of tornados. We are moving out there in a month and a half dont need to get her more freaked out.

seems that the biggest belt of tornado in Indiana may be up in the SouthBend Elkhart area. At least it always seemed like tornados were consistent up that way.
Monticello, Indiana probably had the worst twister I recall downstate... and that was back in the 70's. I am sure there have been others.
Your wife should know that just about anyplace in the US can have a tornado. Northern Indiana, parts of Illinois and of course the plains states tend to have the most.
Flint Michigan had a bad one in 1953... Midland and Grand Blanc tend to have a couple a year in the area.
I lived through a couple of good ones when I lived in Tennessee too.
Ask about the Palm Sunday Storms in 64... a whole string of tornados across southern MI and Northern Ohio and Indiana. That storm took out a big chunk of Coldwater MI and elimintated a little crossroads town in Indiana (just south of S Bend and East of Wakarusa).
The storms are predictable and media gives good alert these days.
I like tormados much better that earthquakes, wildfire and mudslides or volcanos
We have had many scares of tornado potentials in Kansas of late, I think a few have touched down and tore up up some stuff, nothing utterly serious. But starting this weekend we have had (in our area at least) some wonderful rain. The wheat crops are in dire need of moisture to finish filling up the grain heads. Nice to get a touch of Oregon type rain here on the plains for a change.
To hell with them fellas, buzzards gotta eat same as the worms.
