I'm getting soft in my later years
I had to put a dog down last night. Long time pet to my wife who had the little critter for 17 years.
I've done this before, and I will likely do it again, but it was harder this time.
A couple of weeks ago, my folks asked me to shoot a cow. I've done this before, and it isn't one of those chores you look forward to, but it is part of being a rancher.
She was at the point where she needed to go. But I have to tell you, it hurt to do it.
Guess I'm getting soft......

Yes its not a good feeling, but hate watching a critter suffer even more. Its never easy with a dog.Todd/3leg

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

If it gets easy it's time to do some serious talking with a good friend who has wise counsel.

Nuttin' soft about loving a critter. I cried like a baby when I took our miniature Dachshund for her last vet visit. She showed us total unconditional love for 14 years...

I think it's a natural evolution that goes with packing on years.
A fellow just gets to placing a higher premium on things like life.
Seems like there are a lot more things that hit me in the heart these days.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

No, its never easy! Last time I had to send one over The Rainbow Bridge I cried, just like everytime before. I had a hard time eating baked potatoes for a few months after, Dixie LOVED tater skins!!
The hardest ever was a 7 day old pup from the first litter we had. The vet was pure water works too.
My deepest sympathy.

Re: I'm getting soft in my later years
Anyone who doesn't feel sad at the death of a pet is just not quite right. Some hit harder than others, but they have all hit me hard. I swear that I still see one dog standing guard outside on stormy nights. She was the best.

Re: I'm getting soft in my later years
Thanks guys,
Bruiser was laid to rest next to my pistol range on the ranch. Digging that grave in the rocky ground was therapy for me. The stones will be there long after what was left of him are gone. I wrapped him up in my old Mexican blanket because he always loved a warm blanket.

Re: I'm getting soft in my later years
Three of my best friends in the last three years. One died having pups, so that is a bit different, but the other two were long time friends. Very tough, I get a chill, lump in my throat and a tear every time I look at the tree they are buried under.

I feel your pain, I still miss Shirley's dog Rebel...he was such a character.

Re: I'm getting soft in my later years
me too. I even got upset putting my mothers cat down. it was a lunatic of an animal, good mouser but half wild. It started having severe fits in old age. Vet said a lot of money could be spent to work out what was happening or she could just let it go. I suggested it was time, they gave it the needle and that crazy light faded out of its eyes and I still remember that.

Re: I'm getting soft in my later years
It's been several years, but... my last great horse was 28... she started losing weight, did everything I could... I'd won several buckles with her, was family for 26 years. Talked with vet about the best way and he suggested I bring her to his place, as he had 2 horses he'd made arrangements for with a knacker, cheaper than a special trip to my place... Stood talking to her for several minutes, then I gave her the shot, was a blurry ride home with an empty trailer!
Shot a coyote last week... that didn't bother me a bit.

Coyotes are not an animal I feel anything for, other than recoil.

Re: I'm getting soft in my later years
I don't mind shooting all kinds of pests on the ranch. I do it regularly. Armadillos, skunks, coyotes, feral cats, dogs without collars, rattlesnakes....no problem.
Re: I'm getting soft in my later years
I’ve got all three of my earlier Border Terriers in boxes on a shelf in the house . When it comes time to put my ashes in the box their boxes and most likely the two in the house that are walking now will all join me in the box in the human cemetery .
