La Marseillaise
The French have long been our friends. They gave us the Statue of Liberty as well as other things, this is their National Anthem,
we might want to listen close to what it says.

Re: La Marseillaise
No wonder the germans hated it so much in "Casablanca" and brought tears to the eyes to the French refuges who sang it in the movie!

Socialist, anti-Christian and anti-individual liberty. The French revolution, the ultimate reign of terror by mob rule. Ended only by the imposition of dictatorship.

If it were not for our French allies -- and Spanish arms -- we would still be saluting the crown, and then what gun rights would we have? I cut the French a lot of slack, and their cavalry tactics and artillery designs have been an inspiration to the American military.
They have earned the title of American friends, even if they can be difficult at times.

I saw Casablanca on the big screen a few weeks ago. After watching it many times on television and I have the DVD, it was a real pleasure and a totally different experience. Great movie.

Re: La Marseillaise
I have always thought the French National Anthem much more inspirational than Britain's God Save the Whoever...

Any debt of gratitude was owed to the Royal Court and to Lafayette personally, not to any subsequent French government.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Fri Dec 04, 2020 5:03 pm If it were not for our French allies -- and Spanish arms -- we would still be saluting the crown, and then what gun rights would we have? Re: La Marseillaise
I've always thought it ironic that reality has always been the opposite of what the song implies -- ready to roll over and accommodate any invader, but as aggressive as Nazi Germany towards other nations. Yeah, the French backing was a big factor in our winning independence, but on the other hand France would have been wiped out twice over since then without our direct intervention.
Re: La Marseillaise
The French government rolled over and licked Nazi boots. The citizenry didn't and formed resistance groups that fought back, saved Allied servicemen, and help those headed to concentration camps escape.Pisgah wrote: ↑Sat Dec 05, 2020 9:23 am I've always thought it ironic that reality has always been the opposite of what the song implies -- ready to roll over and accommodate any invader, but as aggressive as Nazi Germany towards other nations. Hmm, seems to me our own government rolled over and licked communist boots in the 1970's.
The French had no chance to win, yet, they protected the British evacuation of Dunkirk to the tune of many dead and captured. French ships fired on their own soil on D-Day, French soldiers were there too.

Re: La Marseillaise
The song expresses a nice sentiment and attitude, but THE MOMENT the citizens acquiesced to even ‘registering’ guns they betrayed the honor and dignity of that song, and the lives of all those soldiers who believed in Liberty...

It has been said that going to war without the French is like going hunting without your accordion.
