Senior moment help

Post by Ysabel Kid »

So, I have a pair of black powder cap & ball revolvers, one a clone of a Schneider & Glassick, and one a clone of the Colt Baby Dragoon, where when you pull back the hammer, it won't stay fully back, but drops forward a hair.

This is annoying.

I need to fix these. Now for the senior moment - what part do I need to replace?

Obviously, that would be the NUT behind the trigger!

Jay, you probably know a little bit of "over travel" on the hammers is needed for the action to work. It sounds like you could be over-rotating the hammers; just pull them back far enough for them to "snick" into the catch with the sear/trigger tip. Rather than replacing any parts (maybe the the trigger is a hair too short?), which costs money and may not fix the issue, I wonder if you couldn't fashion some type of block (made of wood, or multiple layers of black electrical tape) positioned to block the hammer from rotating too far.

Maybe some tape wrapped around the top 1/2 inch of the main spring (built up on the top side) would serve to block the bottom left edge of the hammer (see the image below) just as it came to full cock. And if that works and the hammer is soft enough, for a permanent fix you could drill it and tap in a hex-head set screw to do the same thing (coming to a stop against the leaf spring).
