Favorite levergun
What is your absolute favorite levergun? Not the prettiest but the one that you just love for personal reasons? Mine is this old Winchester 94. It’s been with me in a patrol car in Houston, it served admirably while I was a Deputy Sheriff in South Texas. It’s been into Mexico before the more recent unpleasantness.
I bought this gun used at Collectors Firearms in Houston in the early 80s. It’s a near duplicate of one carried by my favorite old Ranger when we rode together. Not fancy. But I have trusted it with my life and I’m confident it will outlast me.

Given to me by a good friend in The Shootists many years ago.
I have put a lot of ammo through it and it has never failed me.

Re: Favorite levergun
That's a much better reason than I have for my favorite leverguns.
I'm down to only one now a early 9422 it was rusty and battered when I got it and although I have had newer and better leverguns over the years this one has never let me down, I can't say any more about it but I kind of love it.

Re: Favorite levergun
There's just NO WAY I can do A favorite. Maybe a "favorite of the day".
Right now, I've been having fun with this old 73 in 44. Made in 1887. Been carrying it hunting this year. Had it 25 years and have used it more in the last month than any time before. Shown here in a "glory shot" with an 19th century box compass from my family, and my Grandfathers Remington knife and drag rope he carried when a Maine warden in the Allagash.
A shout out to Jim. That trapper of yours put on a mission to get a post 64 trapper a few years ago. Never had an inkling to own one before. Testament to your writing skills. I have one I worked over in 44 and a Legendary Lawman I like too.
Just realized I forgot to post the pic!

Thank you sir. I appreciate the shout!
Re: Favorite levergun
I would have to say my Marlin 30-30 CB, 24" octagon barrel.
Must admit I'm becoming more attracted to a lighter, shorter levergun in 357 mag, something like Jim T's "trapper". Nice rifle !

Re: Favorite levergun
Since I quit buying 1894 Winchesters way back in the 1980's, my favorite lever gun has always been the 1893/'93 Marlin. Always loved the rifle version, as I'm not a carbine guy. Calibers don't matter to me much, as I like all the various calibers they were sold in.

Super 93! I've always liked them but never owned one. My favorite Marlin is my 1889 in 38. Round barrel rifle with 2/3 mag.

Re: Favorite levergun
Hard to go with just one, but my one that would be most difficult to sell would be my model 92 in .480 Ruger. It just wants to shoot.

One, hmm? I suppose the one that fits closest here is this 1961 94 which would match what I was looking at in that first Winchester catalog

Re: Favorite levergun
I have four or five favorites.
I'll have to go with the one I've owned the longest, which is my Marlin 336ER in .356Win. It's just a great rifle. Problem is that it's heavy. So...
I bought a Winchester 94AE in .356Win. Shoots the same as the Marlin but is MUCH easier to carry.
There we have it. The 94AE in .356Win.

Re: Favorite levergun
Am fortunate enough to have several Marlins and Winchesters in various calibres. As for a favorite, that probably is my Browning-Miroku M1886 rifle in 45-70. As for a design favorite, I would definitely say that the Marlin with its ease of bolt removal is the favorite.
Now how about shotguns? If I include shotguns, my 1888 Winchester M1887 12 gauge is a favorite among the very few shotguns I have.

Thanks! That's the first Marlin I ever bought. It's factory takedown, with the long lever, and special sights. Also has a factory fitted Whitney-Kennedy trapdoor buttplate.

Re: Favorite levergun
Only ever owned 2 lever actions:
1) Winchester 9422 in .22lr - man I miss that gun
2) Chiappa Alaskan in .44 mag - currently have this one. Really hard to choose between the 2

I like my Marlin 1894p very much, but my Winchester 94 big bore (375 win) has the cool factor.

Re: Favorite levergun
My 'practical favorite' would be my Marlin 1894 CSX 357 Mag threaded, because it is a compact, handy, 357 Mag levergun, AND the threaded muzzle allows a suppressor, which I really like.
My 'sentimental favorite' would be my Marlin 1894 SS 44 Mag stainless, just because it always gets me a deer.
My 'unique favorite' would be my Ruger 96/44 44 Mag, just because I like the slick, short lever throw, the detachable magazine, and - it's a Ruger.
My 'biggest thumper favorite' would be my Big Horn Armory 89 in 500 S&W, because the ability to spit out 350 to 500 grain bullets a half inch in diameter is just awesome.
I have lots of other 'something-or-other favorites', but these four would come to mind...

Re: Favorite levergun
I have many favorites....everything such as rarity, condition, and most of all, how it shoots has to come together for it to be a true favorite and while I'm a Winchester guy I do have a few Marlins that merit special attention to my inner soul. This 1893 takedown Marlin in 38-55 was like a new gun when I got it.....perfect everything..still tight but the case color wore off as previous owners must have left it in full sunlight so I had the receiver re case colored by Turnbull. I've put a couple of thousand rds through this gun and have won more than my share of long range contests against guys using single shot Sharps and Hi Walls. Also won my share of Silhouette matches too.....unbelievable accuracy with a 270 gr gas check bullet.
With some original 1st gen Colts and a 1877 "Alaskan"
Another close favorite....1881 Marlin in 40-60 caliber with a 30" extra heavy # 3 "buffalo barrel that shoots as good as the 1893 above, maybe better.....got a couple of thousand out of this one too...built around '83...12 pounds of steel....--6

Re: Favorite levergun
Winchester 94, 1978 production that I bought for $100 with a broken front sight. I then put a Numrich Arms full octagon.30-30 barrel on it... .850" across the flats from in front of the receiver to the muzzle. I then put a slightly modified Sharps globe & post front sight, and custom Smith Enterprises tang peep on it. Weatherby did the headspacing and Fajen supplied the wood while some guy up in MT did the bone & charcoal CCH on the receiver.
I've won a number of long range 200-400 yard matches with it, including a run of five Buffalos in Silhouette. It's very best group was ¾" @ 200 yards when I was younger and didn't need glasses to correct my vision to 20-20... at the time my vision was still measured @ 20-15. Amere 10 years later and I needed glasses to not only read, but see more than 50 feet without blurry objects!

Re: Favorite levergun
Well, all guns are special and all but one have had some gunsmithing done to them to make them that way. This one is special for a number of reasons and one that I will never part with. It was my first rifle ever, a Rossi Puma in 454. I tried to get Paco to float the barrel and gunsmith it for me, but he referred me to Mic McPherson who completely blued printed it, NP3 plated the internals, through bolt butt stock conversion, trigger work, lengthened action to accept a longer cartridge, improved sights, stock bedding, the list is too long. Not fancy to look at, couldn't afford bling work. 8-9 rounds of 454 Casull, shoots like a dream. Led to a series of events that changed my life for sure. -Tutt

Pitchy,
I am surprised you did not pick your 1876, liked the looks of your rifle, vidoes and write ups about it way back when, that I finally got one in '14. It looks like yours after striping and tung oiling. The first time I handled one was in '06 and took me another 8 years before buying from CDNN at a great price.
All,
Now my favorite levergun is a '70's Marlin in 44Mag that I substituted a full 7/8" Numrich octagon barrel and crescent buttplate and rechambered in 44Mag. I did this back in '92 before Marlin started making their Cowboy Models. It was my CAS rifle for a number of years. Still like it. Heavy but very accurate for me.

Re: Favorite levergun
My favorite. Manufactured in 1910 and modified at some point by some old Arkie who built the perfect whitetail gun. I found it standing in a corner of a gas station when I was 18 which makes it about 1957. I have lots of others, truly I don't know how many but this one I'm attached to. I've no idea how many deer it's killed, more than a hundred maybe 2. That's not counting before I got it.

has a beautiful bore. puts all the shots in one hole at 25 yds
It causes me physical pain, however.
About 10 years ago, the wife and I were driving home from a trip south. We stopped into Kittery Trading Post to have a look see.
I was shocked to see an 1876 Express Rifle. I looked it over and could find nothing wrong outside a fair amount of finish wear. The bore was excellent. It was a full octagon with a full mag. Odd for a 76 Express. It was 7k, and when I looked at my wife she nodded like she always does. We had 2 kids in college at the time. I turned and walked from most likely my only shot at a rifle like that.
