32-20 & 5744

Post by JerryB »

I think that I might have found a CAS load for my old 32-20.I have not been able to get a good cast load to shoot accurate so I have been working with 5744 and today I got some good light loads that were touching on the target. I have some 90gr cast .312 and today I used 8.5gr of 5744, it is light but it gave some pretty good results.Reckon I'll load up a bunch and see how they do for the next match on the 20th of the month. The old Winchester seems to like this load.

I can't recall if I've tried that load, but it sounds like one I'll have to try for sure.

I dont know if you like BP but my buddy has a stevens in 32-20 that wont shoot anything worth a darn unless it is loaded with black powder. With BP loads that rifle will shoot just about any cast bullet into nice clover leaves.

That oughta be a nice mild report, with zero recoil! Hope it works well at your match Jerry!

5744 in the 32-20? I use probably 15 pounds of that stuff every year but its in big cases. I use 5.5 of Unique with a 115 grain biullet in the 32-20. Been serving me fine for over 30 years. 4.5 should be fine for cas.--------------------Sixgun[/code]

I tried Unique when I started working up some cast loads but it did not work well for my rifle, had good luck with 2400 and the 85gr XTP.
