sonic booms
Just read of a sonic bomb in France. Panic.
I grew up near Wright Pat. Airforce base.
In the 50's and 60's we had sonic booms quite a bit.
9-11 I was on duty with the Fire Dept.
There was large boom. Local news said that the VA was under attack!
LOL.
Growing up with booms, I knew what it was.
So I told my crew,"badguys attacked New York, Washington DC and Drexel Oh.
Go figure.
Living the dream.

Re: sonic booms
Funny thing about sonic booms, whenever I hear one I also hear every cock pheasant from miles around all being vocal at the same time.
Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.

Re: sonic booms
We get some doozies here in Alamogordo, with Holloman AFB next door with its squadrons of F-16s, not to mention visitors from other countries. A lot of doubles, too, and only God and the Defense Department know what is going on at White Sands Missile Range.
Re: sonic booms
There used to be sonic booms all over the US when I was a kid. I haven't heard one for years. We used to be glad that the Air Force was up there watching out for us.

Re: sonic booms
There have been some very loud ones here lately.
Re: sonic booms
We used to get them all of the time. But I think the FAA changed some of the rules so larger metropolitan and surrounding areas don't get them anymore.
I too grew up when the sonic boom was the sound of freedom. But as always people forget. Heck, I doubt they even teach 9-11 in school. Or if they do it's taught that down trodden arabs were just striking out in their attempt to be free from the west.

Re: sonic booms
i have lived in Commiefornia basically my whole life except the first 6 months. Son of Ukrainian peasant girl and Kansas farm boy who served in the Navy as a bomber pilot in Vietnam. Grew up playing with a broken tail hook from a Navy aircraft carrier A4 plane in Santa Barbara, CA. I haven't heard a sonic boom, in many, many years. I'm 53 now. I would love to hear another one, this one in Northern California. For sure and for certain. -Tutt

Re: sonic booms
We live in Yuma AZ during the winter, it is right next to the Barry Goldwater Bombing Range, we dont hear many bombs as the drop zone is far away, but sonic booms are not unusual. The sound of Freedom.
Re: sonic booms
Thinking back, the last booms I heard were the double booms of the shuttle landing at Edwards AFB.

Re: sonic booms
It is not unusual to hear sonic booms from the AF in my area as they practice dogfights and practice bombing missions from nearby Smoky Hill ANG Bombing Range southwest of Salina, KS.
Re: sonic booms
I too grew up with frequent sonic booms in the 50's and early 60's. There was an Air National Guard base several miles away and the fighter jets were flying over all of the time.
Also remember watching the old flying "boxcar" aircraft fly over every so often.

Re: sonic booms
My good FIL used to create sonic booms, he flew the old F100s in Germany, back in the 50s, later flying OV 10s in Vietnam, and B52s during the cold war and the cuban crisis. Yeah, he is amazing, will see him tomorrow
Re: sonic booms
Tell him thanks. We never had to drop and cover for real.
