hunting at the remote mine this week
just got back last night , pretty tired. was getting cold out there but had some luck.... we had moose permits for any bull..
we unloaded gear at the little cabin and by then it was 630 pm. my wife said lets drive the trail upstream a bit and check for tracks....I was driving and looking out the side window, wen she said " Stop ! there's a moose, and there it...was probably 150 yds away coming down the trail toward us... and I saw antlers....so being a meat hunter I told her to shoot it ! she said no you do it, supposing that I am a better shot off hand , and not really excitable .
so I got out, and it was grunting challenges at me and started to turn away, but the marlin 336ER in .356 wiinchester barked once and that was it. it went down immediately and didn't get up again
it was about 110 yds away....small rack, medium sized body.
that was about 645pm and the work wasn't done till nearly 1100pm...cutting and bagging in the dark....though we pulled the truck right up to it.
its hanging back home now, and we start cutting it up soon. this sure was a lot easier years ago, when I wasn't almost 73 years old !!

Re: hunting at the remote mine this week
thanks fellows !
we had some for breakfast a day later, and since it wasn't aged yet, it was chewy but great... no " game taste" at all
we still have a lot of work to do processing it the rest of the way.

You deserve an easy "drag" Harold.....I can just imagine how many times it was not like that......
Thinking about this...wow! ....you got the truck right there, you have your doctor skills, weather looks nice, mom was with ya on the kill, you now have loads of meat and it's not the tough meat from a 60" er.---well done!------006

Cool as all get out.
Re: hunting at the remote mine this week
Glad you did well there! I would have thought it would have been dark by 6.30 pm Alaskan time.
Re: hunting at the remote mine this week
congrats... perfect animal for eating.... and not in rut I'd guess? great hunt
Re: hunting at the remote mine this week
NICE!! I like it when a hunt comes together like that. What bullet did you use in the 356? Where did you the butt stock cartridge holder ?

Re: hunting at the remote mine this week
thanks guys !
yes, later on it gets dark really early . right now we are losing at least 5 minutes of daylight per day
the 356 ammo was 220 gr hornady hand load, a warmish load... seems to work well : )
it should be good eating ..... even a big bull is good eating IF you let the meat age properly
it was in the low 20s at night ; our cabin was cozy - we had a great time
didn’t even try calling the moose in... just grateful to get the one we got !!

Nice! Great job.
My son and his buddy have been hunting blacktails on Kodiak. His buddy shot a nice buck. They had a 6 mile hump out with all the gear, meat, and head.
I used to be that young!

.
Haha I believe you!
My son said he is eyeing a spot that is a 6 or 7 mile hike in to. Some really rough country he said. God love him!
We did a lot of hiking around Kodiak this summer. I was surprised how rough it was. Even compared to Maine, the brush is intense.

Sounds like the perfect hunt scenario for guys our age! No hiking, no long hauls, and quickly over; except for the field dressing! Congratulations!

That would make a great 3-4 youtube videos! I'm envious, miss being up there every so often. Todd/3leg

Harold, wonderful hunt and harvest! To borrow a phrase from old Elmer Keith, it is clear the Good Lord was looking after your meat supply.

Wonderful! So happy for your good fortune especially since at this time of our lives we haven't the endurance we had when we were 30. My hands want to cramp just skinning a whitetail (I'm 81) so I use the winch on my truck mounted crane. Yeah, I'm smarter than I used to be.

Re: hunting at the remote mine this week
the buttstock cartridge holder also serves as an elevator for the comb of the rifle so your eye lines up behind the scope quite well and gives a good lock on the sight picture.
they are available in all sorts of models, even with an adjustable comb, and in different colors. in leather or nylon. i have bought them on ebay and from amazon
here is a link to that one on ebay.....sometimes they sell them even cheaper

Re: hunting at the remote mine this week
yes, so true.having had 5 back surgeries, torn both rotator cuffs, etc packing anything much distance is out of the question. would have to camp there and eat the whole thing instead !!marlinman93 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 18, 2020 8:12 am Sounds like the perfect hunt scenario for guys our age! the moose are so big, we just take it apart on the spot. i use a technique where i never gut the animal . i just skin it, disarticulate the legs, cutting off the bony parts with the hoofs still attached, take off the neck. take the head off the neck, ,etc cut the rib cage away on each side, dissect away the diaphragm, take out back strap and psoas muscles [ filet ] , etc leave the spine and pelvic bones
when you are done the guts are still in the gut sac [ peritoneal sac ], and everything else is bagged up and ready to go. no slipping and sliding in the gut pile
here it is the next day....the ravens were enjoying it

Re: hunting at the remote mine this week
You got it right, Harold. I've only had three lumbar fusions, multiple injections, and no rotator cuff stuff so far, knock on wood ...
If I am ever blessed with the chance, this is how I would do it.
