Fire wood, it`s started
This might be the last year i`m going to be able to get wood up, fell these trees last few days.
It`s been really hard going with my health problems but gotta get er done.
Today for the first time in my life i cut below the notch and the tree fell backwards and pinched the saw in the middle of the tree and just stood there, after a bit a wind came and blew it over the wrong way and the butt bounced right on the saw.
Busted the rewind and the handle so had to fix that.
Now have to block it all and split it then pile it, dern wood.

Pitchy what kind of logs are those. They almost look like cotton wood to me other than the birch.
Re: Fire wood, it`s started
Poplar. .green as heck will split smaller and should dry and burn in the outside stove.

Hey Pitchy, you aren't the only one to have has that happen - I had a teacher in high school that had that happen, brand new saw and it was totaled.
The recent tropical storm knocked over a hickory tree onto my shed. Thankfully it slid down the trunk of an oak before landing gently on the shed ! Minimal damage.

Re: Fire wood, it`s started
Pitchy, I messed up my back 2 winters ago and had to haul split wood, it only lasted 5 days. Can't imagine being in pain constantly. I'm taking the easy way out, packing up tea, coffee, spam, instant taters and a few other dried goods for my winter getaway to the Gulf Coast.

I hear ya Lenn on dealing with aging issues. Getting old can be a real PITA. I'll need 2 steroid shots and a mess of pills just to make an upcoming hunt
Do you ever use poplar for your projects? Pretty stable stuff when seasoned yes?
I stuck a four foot saw in a huge madrone once Lucky I had a pile of felling wedges and no one around to see... took an hour to free it.

Re: Fire wood, it`s started
Can't say how much I miss putting up firewood and feeding a fireplace, even with a bad back. Best I did today was stick a pruning saw blade in a mulberry branch. Pretty pathetic. Lenn, if you were just down the way I would come and help. Keep fighting the good fight.

Re: Fire wood, it`s started
I wish You well Pitchy , it's tough all the way around getting old. I put up about 1 1/2 cord of oak in early July My oldest Grandson is big enough to use the mower pulling the wagon. I split it by hand with the Monster Maul . He says to Me "why are You doing this when it's hot"? I have arthritis in My right hand and if I do too much it will swell up and be good for nothing for 3-4 days. I don't need much wood as I can also burn hard coal when it really starts getting cold. stay safe.
Re: Fire wood, it`s started
Pitchy, what kind of poplar? I have all kinds of tulip poplar on my place but it looks quit different than yours.
Re: Fire wood, it`s started
In Minnesota & Wisconsin, the aspen (populus tremuloides, sp ?) Is commonly referred to as "popple" and sometimes poplar.
Lenn, as has been offered above, if I lived closer I'd be out there with my Stihl chainsaws & splitter making wood with you. I'm currently looking forward to making wood again when my sternum heals enough to handle the heavier pieces.
Take care buddy !
Re: Fire wood, it`s started
Yep, it's time to finish up wood for the season and start on next year's.
I had 20 or so trees dropped this year - all big and near the house and
garage. I have plenty of exercise and heat for the next coupla years!
My shoulder kicks up from time to time, but I'm still healthy enough to do
all the splitting and stacking by hand.

All my out building are built from poople stuff gets hard as rock when dry.
Don`t use it much for building things like tables as it`s too white and kinda fuzzy, we like pine for the grain.
Going to start blocking it today if it stops raining.

Like to have never found that pic Lenn. I got a new computer and the new edge is really different. Glad the lifting with power helps your back, it sure does mine. I guess I've put off starting to saw up mine long enough. I've so many projects hanging over my head I'll never live long enough to finish them all. Hang in there Bro, I'm praying for you.

What splitter do you have? The powered hydraulic ones sure speed things up. I have a manual hydraulic one. It helps, but it is still work. Those big red manual ones with the triangle head are hard on you.

Re: Fire wood, it`s started
About 15 years ago I had a friend who is gifted at fabricating, make me a splitter set up on a 3 pt hookup on my IH766. I had him weld on steel "trays" on both sides of the I- beam. This rig has a 20" reach with the cylinder.
I never minded using my 8 lb malls, but my forearms began to ache in the evenings (all night), so I migrated to hydraulics.
I still use the 8 lb mails to make smaller sections from a larger piece, otherwise they're too heavy to lift up to the tray. Like Lenn said........sucks getting old. Usually my biggest problem is my mind thinks I'm still 45 or 50 and my body reminds me later that I'm 67.
I'll make wood as long as I can pull start my saws and finagle the pieces up, onto the splitting tray.

Re: Fire wood, it`s started
Lenn, I know it is a tremendous amount of work to cut, split and put up 10 cords when you are so tired, but I hope you realize how blessed you are that you live where you do and can drop trees, mill lumber, cut firewood and shoot guns all on your own place. It's just a distant dream for a lot of us, and I want to say just how much I appreciate you for letting me come along on your adventures and projects. You are an inspiration.

I got 3 ton of wood pellets delivered on Wednesday, I had all of in put up in the basement in a little over 2 hours. As usual I had lots of volunteers to help but none showed up. Now I have to clean up , cut & split the hickory that fell on my shed, the oak the power company is going to cut down, another oak that's dead. I got lots of wood for the shop stove!
