Lots of bears have been a problem over the years. I wonder how many bears actually participated in the things that became the legend?

People like an answer that assures them the problem has been taken care of.
Whether it was or not does not matter.
The perception that it was is what counts.
In Mozambique we had several crocodile attacks. The Police showed up at the place where the last attack had occurred, shot a crocodile and brought it into the market. There was singing and dancing and great rejoicing as if all crocodile problems were solved. Personally it looked pretty small to me and I knew there were bigger ones still in the river. But everyone was happy.

I always say only shoot the critters that prove to be a problem, 'cause you can bet if you shoot one that ain't it will soon be replaced by one that is......
Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.

I knew (was aquainted with) someone who was eaten by a bear. And know of others.

I was aquainted with two individuals who were murdered and thrown off of their boats. And know of others who were murdered on their boats.

I don't humanize killer bears or naturalize murderous humans, they are equally repugnant IMO.
