Re: Black bear breaks in and meets a '66 Uberti
I'd say so as well!
Several years ago I was at our cabin in PA with the two dogs I had at the time. It was a little before 7 AM and I had just let them out to do their business. When I'd gotten them back inside I hadn't latched the door and about five minutes later the front door creaked open and a black bear was standing on the steps. The dogs started barking like a pack of wolves, I was pulling back the bolt on an L1A1 when the bear ran off. Needless to say, the dogs got an extra special breakfast that morning.

He needed more gun, but at least he had one.
Re: Black bear breaks in and meets a '66 Uberti
He and his wife were unharmed. Maybe a more powerful caliber would have helped, but how dead do you want the bear tto be? It said he is pretty familiar with his rifle. Maybe a .45-70 would have helped. Maybe not.

I'm showing this to my wife. She sometimes wonders why I "bring that cannon" (1895 GS) when we go to the local mountains. I imagine that fellow wished he had one of Uberti's 45-70's. Maybe Uberti should send him one.

The report mentioned that he was a Cowboy Action shooter, I wonder what ammo he was using? Good job that he brought that 66 with him...

Re: Black bear breaks in and meets a '66 Uberti
Couple weeks ago a guy walked into his garage and got mauled by a bear. Whole bunch of stitches to his face, neck, arm. Where did this happen? New Jersey! Our dimwit governor has banned hunting bears on state property. The bear population is high, they have no fear of people.
Years ago I had a window bird feeder, came home from work and found the feeder gone, muddy prints on the glass, corner of the house had claw / tooth marks. I called F&G, they told me since I was baiting bears( by feeding the birds) they weren't responsible. So when the bear breaks into the house and I shoot and kill it what do I do? Ummm... call the police was what I was told.
Now any time I see a bear I throw fire crackers at it, chase it with bottle rockets. They are constantly tossing trash cans, pinesol deters them.
Love to see bears but when they become destructive or nuisance then they are no better than antifa!

I’d expect a .45 Colt would be enough gun for a black bear with correct Ammo. Obviously it ultimately was, but I’d have expected with the right ammo reloading would not have been necessary.

When I lived in the woods of Maine I kept a 1895 Marlins n by the front door ALWAYS. We had rabbits , horses and dogs. My ex thought I was crazy....until we were on our way out to church one Sunday, and there was a black bear sleeping in the bed of her truck. We let it sleep a while in the sun then scared it off with a shot in the air. Enough caliber for other pest too...tall ones.

Elmer Keith once said "when You NEED a Gun ,you need it badly, and there is no time to be looking for shells or fumbling with clips" . this guy was prepared and It surely may have saved His and his Wife's life or at least a bad mauling like happened a few weeks ago.

Back in the late 1800's , I believe it was "Buffalo Bill" Cody who wrote about an encounter with a grizzly. He had a 73 Winchester in 44-40 .. would have been black powder loads in those days. As the grizzly came at him, Bill said he gave him the entire magazine from the rifle, and that stopped him. He said something like it was more lead than he could digest. If I recall correctly he said it was 15 rounds.

That makes for an exciting start to the day......
And in the end, it WAS enough gun.

Steve- put a cap full of Pinesol in each bag of garbage, doesn't hurt to put some in the can too. Bears hate it and will learn to go look elsewhere for a free meal!

.
Think on it. It's dark and the bear is in the cabin less than 4-feet away.
This CAS guy pulls the Uberti up, cranks 8 rounds into the bear, reloads, and shoots the bear one more time.. (Because it was still moving... )
This gentleman made a good choice following his intuition when he saw the bear outside, and he had the skills he needed. Load up. Keep 'er close.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Maybe the inspiration for some of the scenes in Clint Walkers Night of the Grizzly.JimT wrote: ↑Tue Aug 11, 2020 8:55 am Back in the late 1800's , I believe it was "Buffalo Bill" Cody who wrote about an encounter with a grizzly.
