Re: My first wooden bucket, plus canteen
It occurred to me that one of those canteens minus the 2 ends and with a ground hog hide stretched over one end would make a fine drum. Couple of feathers maybe.

Re: My first wooden bucket, plus canteen
The tin one looks to me to be an early bomb or mine...could be used to sink one of those early ironclads... .
Re: My first wooden bucket, plus canteen
Yea it`s different though they were made that way some all tin.
I ordered some of that sealer Bill mentioned so they will be usable canteens.
Making another all wood one today.

Re: My first wooden bucket, plus canteen
Lenn, I haven't worked with it much, but you could use wet rawhide to bind your next canteen. Let it dry and those slats aren't going anywhere!
Re: My first wooden bucket, plus canteen
Good idea Bill but i don`t think i have enough rawhide left to cut a couple strips from that will reach around it.

Got one of the two done but had to quit as it`s 93 and humid today.
This is a easy design, cut a hollow circle and glue two sides on it, this is made from Pine.

Re: My first wooden bucket, plus canteen
They are really cool I still think you should sell them to reenactors, they would look great next to the possibles bag and powder horn, practical too...

Re: My first wooden bucket, plus canteen
If you lightly toast the inside with a flame of the oak ones before you put them together, would they be good for keeping the whiskey in?

Re: My first wooden bucket, plus canteen
Lesson learned, put water in the pine canteen this morning and as i watched the sides pushed out.
Pine absorbs the water so fast and swells fast, not sure what i`m missing, maybe straps would keep it together.

I recall seeing old buckets with a stain at the seams.....

Re: My first wooden bucket, plus canteen
Got the Brewers pitch today, says it`s just pitch on the instructions which is melt and pore it in the canteen shake around and pour out which i did and it works good.
I now have a pine tree set up to bleed and collect some pine pitch myself.

Re: My first wooden bucket, plus canteen
Glad it pleases, Lenn.
We've got ponderosa here -- good pitch for making pitch glue if you mix in a little crushed charcoal and ground elk pellets.
