I gotta get to the range too at some point. Gotta test some 44s in the old 73.
Gotta load a test in 44mag too.
I did get the garage all turned around for spring thus past weekend. Got the old Jeep back down off the jackstands. Should be fiddleheadin' before too long.
Well, if winter would just quit.
I'm headed to OR on Wednesday, in looking for a load out of there, I was asked if I wanted to go to Bangor, ME... I told her that I was pretty sure their 2 weeks of summer was a couple of months away... I don't do Winter well... that & I have to drive thru either the wasteland that's called NY or our northern neighbor... and neither seems to feel I have the right to protect myself. That, and NY requires me to put an ugly azzed sticker on my bumper...
Sorry we will miss a visit Griff. I don't blame you a bit, however. That's why I hate traveling. Having to pass through all the communist states. We're just a little island up here.

Thanks Jack. Gotta keep looking. I am actually getting pretty excited about having a Big 50 even if it’s a rebore on an original.
Listen to experience....your not going to gain nothing....I was there for a few years and luckily nothing came my way....this is what will happen......you will spend big money one way or another, even getting set up for reloading for it.........you will tell everyone...you will shoot it....you might be pleased with its accuracy....most don't.......you might kill a deer with it.....it will get put back ....way in the back of the safe and unless you buy an original which you bought at a fair price....which you won't....your gonna lose money.
I didn't take you under my wing just to have a nice walk in the park......you need to carry on the legacy!--6
I have a .50 ... TC New Englander, a reasonable way to go but not what you are thinking. Shoots round ball and conicals. Put a lot of blavk powder through that.

There has to be molds available. Would I do the conversion? I'm not sure but the smith side of me I'm intrigued by the swap. I'd say you need to do it as an SBR with can!
Guess who decided to roll in the same stinky pile this morning! Then guess who is getting a bath this afternoon!! By flashlight I can see that whatever was the desirable stinky stuff has been worked over by other canines, foxes I'm sure. The detritus is all torn up... I fixed the problem by my full bladder making MY territory!!
I DO HEAR what you are saying Jack. However, I also know an old guy who occasionally uses a phrase with the initials F and I. I have a rusty crusty 86 that has already been rebored once. The conversion is $200. I have dies which have had for “some day”. I can use my .348 shell holder. I need brass, bullets or a mold and a pilot for a case trimmer. I am thinking heavy bullet moderate loads(unless someone else is shooting it, then they get ONE full magilla). Whack a couple deer and fondle it every time a western talks about the big 50. Might even get the Rifle out too
I know with my head you are right BUUUT I want it, I can afford it and I am gonna do it(I think). Remember you are talking to a guy who put a 500 horse 351Cleveland with two stages of nitrous in a 66 mustang.
Heck I hang out here I can’t be but so bright

Gunny a couple different places to get already cast bullets also. I am gonna try a couple different before I buy a mold unless something comes up first. Thinking 480 to 525 range. With BP equivalent loads of 5744 or similar powders
And while working from home this morning I crisped a half pound of bacon a pound of sausage and a pound of kielbasa in a stock pot. Added a large vidalia, couple pound of potatoes, chicken and beef stock,2 beers, spices and a touch of water. This is simmering and carrots, corn and a small amount of noodles to be added at appropriate times. Dinner is served( not yet but by 1800 it will be fantastic) at 1500. I turn it off let it cool then heat it up again (my Grandmother always did this she said everybody liked it better the next day so she fooled the soup into thinking it was the next day).

Mine is a .53 cap lock. And, even with "target" loads of 50 grains, it uses up a LOT of black powder. But, Tom, I have to agree with Jack... I probably haven't shot my Hawken in 20 years! I even found a round ball holder that was loaded with 7 already patched RBs just waiting to jammed down the barrel, plus a homemade pouch full of cast .520 round balls, and m
y homemade cap holder (stuff piece of leather with holes punched in it), full of caps!!!
And lord knows my bunker has a load or two of black powder left in it! And still ain't shot it in 20 years... BTW, both the # of years and # of loads are a bit conservative!!!

I like trucker stories...I've heard a million of em over the years.
OK Tommy Gun........your pretty well set up......I relent......didn't think it all the way through.......my thinking comes from original guns that were factory chambered for the 50-100-450 of which only a couple of hundred were made so that's not gonna happen......KEEP DAT IN MIND.....50-100-450 and NOT the 50-110-300 .....same cartridge, different twist......ALSO.....
Pop the forend off and look for a date under the barrel right where the barrel connects to the receiver......the single digit years were only stamped with one number ...as in "3" for 1903. Do yourself a favor and don't use a blackpowder barrel.....there are all well over a hundred years old and you never knew what was fired in them......going to 50 caliber will lighten it up more....get a nickel steel barrel (good luck!) or have a new one made.
Even if the gun was made after around 1898 does not mean it's a smokeless barrel........it was common for Winchester to use up old barrels and if they used a nickel steel barrel for a blackpowder cartridge it won't be marked on the area that visible but will come up as a stamping underneath the forend ..."nsm" ....like that like new 32-40 I sold you....
You come see your papa if you need anything more......you gots ma number----6
Hey...the Blue Angels are supposed to do a flyover in Jersey and come on down the 1-95 corridor in a few minutes......1-95 is about 7 miles from me....maybe I'll see them.....
Hey Tom,
Sounds like your most of the way there. I WOULD take unto consideration what Six said about the barrel though. One thing you could do is get the barrel MPI'd. That would tell you if there were any stress cracks or weak spots.
I know for myself, I never shoot my bigger Winchesters. Can't tell you why. I just prefer the pistol cartridge guns up to about 38-55. That's just me, though. Some guys like the big boomers.
I WILL say, I like a good project though. As long as it's not trashing a good 86, go for it. Especially if the donor gun is just languishing in a corner.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
Thanks guys. I realize this ain’t a model 71. I am not looking for high end loads. A 525 grain slug going sloooow is still like getting hit with a hammer. Also note that Instill have three other 86’s

Mercury peaked at 98° today but not to worry. Most of the day it was only 95°. Snow on Mt Baldy but not here in the valley. Hottest this early since at least 1976. Old inshore, you guys would call it off shore or deep sea picture ... 20 lb sea bass.

Your close and not bad for being 5 years old when the movie was made......I was 20 and old Savage was 27....the car was a 1934 Ford 3 window coupe.....
Anyway, that is a big fish Kid.....you eat them or is it sport? I used to catch a lot of fish when I was in high school......or at least it smelled like fish.....
We don't mind being called 'back east ' - we refer to you guys as LEFT COAST and not cuz you are on the left coast although I'm sure you already know that.
Both sea bass and those yellow tail are good on the table. Here we fish for striped bass, my best was just over 42 lbs, bluefish which are like over sized piranhas with a bad attitude and fluke- left handed flounder.
What are the cops in ME doing? Playing guitar and singing- no crime I guess they have to entertain themselves.
Today the Brown Wonder goes for the 8 week post op checkup, sure hope she gets CLEARED for duty, I'm tired of leash walking and she is really really tired of it too! She wants to RUN !
Grew up in Florence, NJ, college in Wilkes Barre, PA. Then on to Davenport, IA for chiro college, that after a four month stop at Fort Polk, LA. Then to Lancaster, Ca, been wandering west since the 60s. So out west, back east an in between including Maine and Texas have been in the itinerary and various points in between.

I had spent a good deal of my childhood near Woodfords CA, was great family time. Probably where& when I learned my love of sage brush covered flats with mountains for a background! Also learned how lucky I was to not live on the res!!
Ok....you guys who are intellectually cultured to the different areas of the country........where does your heart belong?.........it's usually where you grew up.....I'm not well traveled as being a Cancer I like roots and my home is my sanctuary.....farthest west I've been is Utah...north is N.H. south is Fl.......grew up in the same house for 18 years...then a ten cent apartment in De, 5 cent rental house in Pa and then here for the last 45 years...
People think traveling around gives you "culture" and different areas of the country have better people.... B.S....no matter where you go people are f.u. ....it's just a traveler does not stay in the area long enough to see what's really going on....take the Caribbean islands for example....if you stray past the fence of the resort area you will die and I sure as hell would not want to spend a lot of time down in Cajun country or the hillbillies of most mountain areas and especially around snowflakes like in San Fran. where squatters rights are more important than who owns the house.
My heart is in S.E. Pa..but away from congested areas like Philly........change of seasons, no natural calamities, plenty of money and jobs, super duper gun laws, mostly common sense and just enough people that's neither congested or more importantly, isolated and the mountains are only two hours away.
Well.....
I grew up in the same house for my whole childhood. Stayed through tech school when I was home on weekends. I paid room and board to my folks for 2 years when I got out and went to work. We were painting the back garage one day when the owner of the place behind my folks was painting his steps. I hollered over and asked Bob if he wanted to sell it.
I moved across the lawn. It's the only move I've made.
I'd say that is rooted.
Never traveled much till I was 50. I don't see me leaving Maine. All I need is here. There are a couple of western states we love. We could live there or Alaska.
Western Canada is beautiful. The politics, however, are abhorrent. So that ruins that.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
Well Six my heart is NOT here, sage brush country!! Funny I love the smell of it but cant stand the taste of sage! I really do love the w I d e open the high desert gives a guy.
Yes family there, my maternal grandmother, 100% Washoe INDIAN, she married an Englishman and got off the res. He was a Justice of the Peace. Anyhow I spent my time out there fishing the mountain lakes, chasing fence lizards, feeding scorpions to red ants, sleeping under the stars- good clean wholesome kid stuff!
I grew up in the very Northern desert of the Llano Estacado. Spent some time in Nawth Kyeerline-uh, Kentucky, and the Republic Of Korea. In Kansas, I left the desert portion for the MidWest called Lawrence. School there. Lived in the Flint Hills for a while, and moved to Texas. Southern part of the DFW Metroplex. In good traffic it is about an hour to where Griff lives. I am about an hour and a half from BrianSh, and a little over an hour from RKrodle. I like Texas. It is a good place to live, and along with CRS and some others I have forgotten to mention, it has a bunch of good people.

interesting.......me and Jay are close with me living about 4 miles from where I grew up. Like Jay, my wife (except for our 2 years renting) moved from the 1804 farm house across the pasture about 200 yards.....
Kind of figured Gunny don't care for the state of Jersey but he does like his home where he is living.....nice digs away from congestion.
Never been to Texas but the people (mostly truckers) I have talked to from there over the years appear to be down to earth. Hey Piller.....have you picked up a lot of Spanish? Seems like a fair amount of people who live in the south get to know Spanish fairly well........only other language around here...down the road in Philly and Chester......that is spoken regularly is Ebonics.----6
I can tell you all about your medicine in Spanish or in American Sign Language. Some Hispanic folks sort of get a little surprised to have a guy like me who looks mostly Irish and German speaking in Spanish with a Costa Rican accent. My Spanish Teacher was Costa Rican.

I like the high desert here in the Mojave. No bugs, no humidity. Had to stop going to the midwest and east in the summer. The wind and the heat here don't bother me. California and the west physically are a nice place. I like the wide open, see 50 miles in any direction here.

Gunny....late forties-50's.....look on the back for a stamping in ink......for most of their manufacture life, the last two numbers on the back are the year. Going out of my head.....Joyce Hornady got started after the war.
I know some Spanish......Spanish guy ar work taught me some bad words...like "pato". I took two years of German but I forgot it as fast as I learned it.
Working on the bridge to River Kwai except mine is 24' long and 30" wide.....used some 4 x 4's by cutting them to 24" then ripping them in half....they are close to 40 years old and still are somewhat solid....beats spending $2-300 on a bridge that I'll use 5 times a year. Main beams are Locust about a foot thick.---6
I don't think I've ever seen a Hornady box that old.
Good luck with the bridge, Six. Make sure and post a pic when it's done.
So the other day I'm over the old man's cutting a big limb off an oak out back. It was all chainsaw off a ladder so I didn't want him doing it. Of course, you can't keep hin away, so he is out there moving brush and lugging wood after I cut it.
After a while he just sits down. That ain't like him, so I ask if he is ok."Oh.....just kinda woozy."
I get him inside and call for an ambulance to get him checked. Just don't want to take any chances.
I tell ya, it's a good thing it wasn't anything much or he'd of died while 911 was grilling me. I bet I was answering questions for 10 minutes. Finally, when they asked me to take his pulse, I told em "If I was a doctor I wouldn't have called you." I was pretty PO'd. This insanity is getting ridiculous.

I'll look for a lot number, thanks Six. The box is full, might have to try some out of my 308 .
Jay my neighbors son is a paramedic in a the Newark area- he was one of the first to get this gook bug- he and his partner had to quarantine, he had symptoms and went back to work after a couple weeks. I don't doubt that the volunteer squads are very very cautious! Big question is how is your Dad now?
Thing is, there is like 14 cases in the whole county, and only a couple hospitalized. The hospital parking lot is empty. The EMS guys said they are just sitting around doing nothing.
Meanwhile, there are lots of the usual cases of sickness and injuries that are going untreated while these places sit empty. I wonder how many people have died because of this?
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
Good to hear he is ok !
Yes that's a good question! My neighbor- the leukemia survivor also has heart issues, she cant talk to a doctor, has to speak with a P.A. the the info is passed to the doc and back to her. Why the Dr. Cant pick up the phone to speak with her is beyond me ! I can see where the game of 'telephone ' could possibly cost lives !!
The more this goes on the more I'd like to wipe out a certain commie government but I CANT say that, can I ?
Dang Jay.....that's great that pops is fine but....there has to be a reason why he felt dizzy....look into it and be proactive.....most likely it was a little too much for him to do.....did not pace himself right.......I've noticed that with me....my heart says, "get that big rock and move it over here" and I start racing around for no reason and my body can't take it anymore. Most guys still think they are young when they are old.....take care of Pops....he needs you at this stage of life......
I'm gonna let you guys in on a secret that's well known to insiders.......hospitals are letting people die.......if someone you care about goes into the hospital for any reason, you had better be there for them.....the staff becomes indifferent to each persons individual needs. With this covid stuff it's really bad......you DO NOT want to go into a hospital for any reason......same goes for nursing homes.
I heard that all the deaths are being lumped into corona virus because each death is a large sum of money the hospital gets- that adds up , dont know where the money is coming from...?
Back on the Road Again! And it sucks big green donkey whackers! Fast food only, no ordering togo from truck stop restaurants. Shuttered! So, last nite I had my choice of what looked like greasy monkey on a stick and macaroni salad made with mayo, or an apple! I've had C-rats that were more appealing! I opted for the apple! Unfortunately the bottom third was bruised! Favored Naval Expletive... many times in a row!
Given how fat & outta shape your typical truck driver is, maybe they're used to this fare! I wouldn't have given that slop away, let alone offered it for sale!
I came to the US by way of the sea, been all over the Pacific on the ocean, raised in CA, hitch-hiked from. CA to FL, to NY to WA, Lived in the "Big Easy", S. FL, NE, TN and a few others. I've been to all 50 states and all of Canada, except Nova Scotia. Frankly, the sea has my heart. A good sized modern sailboat can be single-handed, and with 3-4 crew a piece of cake! Yep, I could cut the lines!

Gunny, you are 100% correct. Everything is listed as Corona in the hospital cause they get more federal money. Shameful what has happened to this nation.
Griff,
I know you make light of it, but I know truckin' ain't easy.
My FIL drove all his life till he suffered a stroke behind the wheel. Got her to the side of the road safely just the same. You guys keep this country going. I drive 100 miles a day to and from work in some horrendous conditions and have witnessed what you guys have to deal with on the road. Not to mention the guys in the woods out in the cold and snot putting on chains or having skidders tow em in and out of yards.
Hang tough buddy.

In our area (that’s all I am sure of,but probably more widespread) Covid 19!deaths get a $40 THOUSAND dollars aid package from the US Government. Fact not speculation. So if a guy gets run over by a truck and he h test positive after being squished guess what the COD was.
Jay make sure Pops was drinking enough fluids( Not
tea, not coffee not Barley pop) he was showing pretty common symptom of beginning of dehydration. Obviously I am not a Dr and anybody who tries to diagnose with these few facts is stretching, but dehydration is a good starting point for those symptoms. Lots of older people are afraid of incontinence so they limit their fluid intake, or drink lots of the wrong stuff. Just a place to start asking questions.

Griff you have my respect! I hate driving anymore, going more that 15 or 20 miles one way gets me blood up! I drove a straight truck for close to 10 years and that's what changed my POV. Morons in 4 wheels riding yer backside when loaded to the hilt not realizing just how bad 30 foot I-joists through their windshield could be for their complexion ! Or how bad it would be if the brakes failed when loaded with 10 ton of stone on board !!
Tom I was thinking the same thing- he was dehydrated!! I know myself when I need WATER- not bottled water either! Water has to have minerals in it for your body to absorb it. I can drink a case of Poland Spring and not get any benefit from it( other than make my kidneys work)but 1 glass of tap water and I can feel it . Yes I literally can feel it! My old chiropractor, heck of a guy- 1968 Olympic pistol shooter, brother of a general under Patton, anyway he held 4 doctorates one of which was in nutrition and he told me the only way you can rehydrate is by drinking water- exceptions being liquid WITH minerals added. Not juices, soda beer etc.
40 K each huh? Think I'm in the wrong business!
Oh hey, I made 5 bucks today! All for about .0005cents worth of ink !! Few weeks back I filled out a Nielsen Ratings questionnaire- todays mail got a thank you and a crisp $5 bill !!
Also just checked my IRS stimulus- i talked to my accountant and she gave me the website. Check is being mailed tomorrow! I'm rollin in it now!
How could I forget! Claro had her 8 week post op checkup yesterday, vet says she is NOT exactly where she should be in her recovery!! But she has been cleared for light exercise and to resume normal life with NO over exertion. So no hard running to play fetch- which is what she WANTS more than anything!!! I plan to start her swimming this weekend. If she doesn't show improvement in another month then more xrays to try to figure out what's going on.

Thank you Tom. I thought the same thing.
