Jack! My paternal Grandfather was a welder at Newport News shipyard in Virginia. So when we would go visit during the summers he would teach me to weld so we had something to do together. He had an old Lincoln tombstone welder(arc) and a Giant ox acetylene setup. I was told k but then didn’t weld for 20 years. I then bought a Hobart 180. Very easy to use and depending on what wire you use either uses a shielding gas or can use flux core(has flux in the wire so no gas, but much better with the gas... in my opinion). This set up and a couple videos on YouTube will have you sticking stuff together quickly. Some people say to buy a good welding cart for the machine buuut I think making a welding cart is a great first project. Before you go to Home D checkbout tool king to see if they have any. Refurbished and carry a full warranty. Like the old adage says when all you have is a hammer all problems look like a nail. When you have a welder all problems look like they can be welded. Also with the plasma cutter you need your own compressor (which you do)!it isn’t part of the plasma cutter.

Who's the litttle tyke? Cute little guy........rough world he is entering.....make him tough!!!!!!

I'm thinking Jays son should have the mighty 35 Winchester tomorrow, maybe Tuesday...don't know if people work on Mondays.

OK guys...I'm going to be picking your brains in the ensuing weeks.....gonna turn the 35 Winchester into a plasma cutter, MIG welder, brakes for both Jeeps, complete fluid changes on the mighty Kubota and go out and blow the rest at a T-bar and medical treatments I'm going to need after the T bar......aids, crabs, shankers, lice, dirty underwear, and head lacerations from my wife after I do make it home.

Hey!!!! Did you hear about the old man who had a doctors appointment and he brought along his wife who waited in the waiting room? She waited 2 hours and when the old guy and the doctor came out she wanted to know why it took so long....The doctor explained, "we had to take a urine sample, a stool sample, and a sperm sample." The old woman said, "Why didn't you tell me as I could have just brought in his underwear!"----6

Jack, the 220 welders are in my opinion more versatile. You can crank them down to do thin stuff and twister up for heavier stuff, like kubota buckets or trailer frames ect. I mainly do thinner stuff like sheet metal, some brackets, little projects around the house, buuuuut once in a while I have to go to the high side of its ability and it sure is nice to have it. Changing wire size is easy and only takes a couple minutes but more often than not I use.30 wire and an argon mix for the shielding gas.

Jack, the other thing you gotta figure into your budget is the gas. These units don’t come with the bottles of gas. So if you go with the gas shield welder then ya gotta get a bottle and gas. Pretty easy to find even out here in Berks county.

I've been smiffin all morning. Seems I never did any function testing on the h&h ! Max case length of 3.600 was longer that the original mag well on the action so I started removing steel at the front, now its feeding but last round is only feeding about 50% ... scratching my head... ah, left rear of follower hanging up, polished it up and seems like I'm sneaking up on it.

Jack, the only thing about a shielding gas... is that you have to have the gas around. I find it hard enough to keep my oxygen & acetylene bottles up to snuff. The shielding gas is really only needed if you're welding aluminum or stainless. Aluminum oxidizes so fast you can't get it to stick together without a shielding gas. With stuff like bronze you need full ppe because of the fumes. Stainless, the welds just seem so much better with a shielding gas.

In case you're wondering, the shielding gas is there to keep oxygen away from the raw aluminum as it heats and reaches "welding" temps. It also uses a completely different hose & gun setup from a std. MIG outfit, costs more. I don't know if you can use a gas setup without the gas... Let me know if you get the gas setup tho'... as I want to build an aluminum gas tank for the bed of my dually!

Griff, I don’t want to argue with you buuut. With a true MIG (metal inert gas) you use a shielding gas for mild steel also. Aluminum and stainless use a spool gun, different wire and a different gas than mild steel. Yes you have MIG welders that use a flux core wire but for the best welds and use of the machine use gas. HOWEVER for LOTs of projects a flux core wire without gas is adequate. Do your research Jack because some machines my Hobart included, come without the bottle and set up for the flux core wire. You can start welding right away. They include the “kit” to make it a gas machine and when you are ready you can get the bottle connect some hoses and a regulator bam you have shielding gas. Kinda depends on what you want and your needs. Are you gonna do most of your welding in one spot( garage, barn ect) a gas bottle isn’t a big deal to have attached to your cart, or if you are gonna try and be mobile with the welder then a big gas bottle will be a PITA.

Shielding gas???? What's that? You mean I just can't buy a MIG welder with a spool of wire and weld up something? I'll only be doing regular scrap steel and brainless projects...I ain't building a battle ship.....chit! I'm discouraged already.

F it! I'll just buy a couple of tubes of JB Weld.

Something happens to some people when they get old.....I just not willing to take on anymore learning curves even if they are simple. I believe the term is called "lazy in the mind".

Gunny...that has to be one of the most pizz poor cartridges I ever saw.....maybe it's the way the photo was taken but is that a super irregular case mouth? Looks like a 32-20 and a possible .321 bullet in it. Could be a .318 js bullet...

Oh screw it....thunder storm at the moment.....I'm going outside to climb on the barn roof holding a monkey wrench and outstretch my arms to the heavens.

Shielding gas? Does it stink? Will it go through my pants without making a hole like methane gas will? I've been told a fanny burp is the sharpest thing in the world as it will go through your pants without making a hole.

80 mph winds were forecast.....I can go outside right now, fanny burp, and the stink will stay with me...nuttin' out der.---6

tom, you're right. I have the flux core wire on my Hobart 190. For mild steel it's the best I think. No tank & hoses to concern myself with. I should have been more specific. Didn't even think about non-flux core wire.

Six yes it looks funny, I neglected to anneal the case before I rammed the 338 expander into a 257 neck so it's not very smooth! One of those things from long ago!

Not a big learning curve for a mig welder. Normally the shield gas is argon , as Tom said it prevents oxygen from corroding the molten metal creating a a poor weld. Flux core wire has flux inside it to prevent corrosion. Easy enough. I wish there was a school around here that had a welding class as I'd like to get back up to speed again.

OK..ok...I answered the phone and learned more from the phone call that a 6 month course is welding will do...THANKS TOMMY GUN.

With the way people are dropping dead I see no need to rush out and buy a MIG welder....in 6 months, after half the population is dead, I'll be able to pick one up on Craig's List for pennies on the dollar or just for the taking.

Just looked at Italy's death chart...with minor fluctuations it ain't changed much in a month and supposedly the weak and vulnerable died first........so who's dying?

A county college, they used to offer welding but they stopped it years ago. Only other place is more than an hour away- NOT gonna happen.

Deep breath Six, it's going to be ok, different but ok. Gotta be positive!

Spent the whole day working on the 375, there was a lot of tinkering and fiddling to get it to feed all from the mag. Had to reshape and polish the claw extractor for belted mag case head. Then I realized that a base screw was binding on the left recoil lug upon opening, 15 passes with a OO Swiss file cured that!

Thanks a lot guys.....we have 17 dogs buried in our pet cemetery with 4 others in different places and it never gets easier when throwing the dirt on them.

Dogs are a constant reminder that there is still good in this world. I can't say much else about this nasty world even by the ones who take the moral high road......ya figure, I was born and raised a Roman Catholic, my kids went to Catholic School and then as I got older and learned a thing or two I realized how F up this world is. The clincher was when studying WW2 history and learning how the Vatican helped Nazi's escape just and due punishment not to mention the many boys lives that have been altered by the very ones they put their trust into.....priests? ...a joke..

If I would have known at 20 what I know now, I would have just built a 2 room log cabin deep in the mountains and been a hermit with a few dogs......yea, and a few Winchesters & Colts. :D ---6. Thanks bros!

Max.....gone before his time....7 years old...a Teacup Yorkie....my wife and I believe people are doing many breeds of dogs a disservice by breeding dogs to be little for their own pleasure.....very little dogs are more prone to diseases and organ failure.
