That's strange, I saw him on a PSA yesterday telling people to wash their hands.
I saw or read that even when he was shooting the tv series he did not know his characters name!

Strange thing about that show. In the book Trampas was a bad guy. I guess he reformed for TV

Sad news about James Drury.

Film buffs would note that he was the third "Virginian" and a nice Trampas.

First was Gary Cooper in 1929. Trampas was a bad guy, dressed in black.

Along with the death of Clint Walker recently, we have lost some real talent as well as a couple of true gentlemen. My favorite episode of the Virginian was one where he had a new saddle made. He and the saddlemaker did not see eye to eye on how it was to be made and why. A newly arrived young female lawyer helped The Virginian to win the case. In order to win, she had to have The Virginian explain to her in detail what was wrong with the way the saddle was made and why. You could see The Virginian struggling to put into words that which he thought was obvious and went without saying. Drury really showed his ability to put inner feelings on the screen in that episode.

I was able to get an autographed photo just a week or so before Mr. Walker passed. Not many of the old Western stars left.

Rube, I, too, got a photo from Clint not long before he passed. I just really admired what Cheyenne Bodie stood for. I recently watched the first year's episodes of "The Rifleman" again, and had forgotten the lessons in right, wrong and character building that were constantly written into that series. I wonder if that's not one reason so many of the Boomers seem to have a firmer grasp on citizenship than later generations.

Yeah, me and my sons still watch all the old westerns. They all have a good lesson to take from them about right and wrong that you rarely see in today's shows.

Absolutely Rube

A lot of "not into westerns" folks just don't get the overall plot of the genre. The whole point is that they were "morality plays". They taught us when maybe we didn't know we were being taught. We learned why the bad guy was bad and the good guy was good. We could use a whole lot more of that these days.
