The rest of the story please.
I hate it when a story leaves me hanging.
This is one of those. They mention that the soft body parts are "recomposed" in 30 days. What about the skeleton? That's got to take months. I'm not buying the low-emissions line, especially after seeing the sketch of the "recomposing hall" that is fancier than most funeral homes.
As to these comparisons with the carbon footprint of cremation and burial, I have always thought cremation was a huge waste of fuel and a huge carbon dump. As to the arguments about burial? Well, some big urban areas may be "running out of space" but look at what is available just in the wide-open West.
Embalming is not at all necessary, nor is some huge and expensive casket, a vault -- any of that. Two gallons of diesel to run the backhoe, a sheet for the corpse and done, except for a marker.
I have told my loved ones -- dig a hole, put Bill in, backfill. But do put up a stone that passing dogs can pee on, please.

I'd like to be cremated in a cheap cardboard box. Whatever VA and Social Security will cover. I told my Daughter not to spend one red cent if she can help it. I'm sure it's not allowed, but if I had my way they would throw in some coal with my body for a real, black smoke screen....just to pee off Greta.....

I told one of my sons that a Viking funeral would be appropriate and he said, "does that mean we can shoot flaming arrows at the boat"?
chipped off I'd say . . . . .

Sounds good to me, my ancestors were Vikings. Set me adrift and set it aflame. Might cause a bit of a stir on Lake Erie, but it would be so worth it!

If we still have any FFGs in the fleet, I'd like to sponsor a steel beach cookout, have my ashes fired from the gun and get a sendoff from the crew. Any funds left over buys the first round at the E Club.

I was thinking of being cremated and having a custom powder horn made up to put my ashes in ,then have the horn hung on the wall under my favourite muzzleloader

^I like it!
Re: The rest of the story please.
There are schools of medicine and other research organizations who will dispose of you for nothing if you donate your cadaver to them.....
If your survivors want your cremains returned, it costs anywhere from $500 to $900 dollars.....
But I doubt that they worry too much about such inanities as carbon footprints when firing up the furnace.....Or even it is actually your dust in the cardboard box.....
Most use natural gas if that is any comfort to you, environmentally speaking.....

Alas, the perry class frigates are no longer in commission in our fleet.....
The admirals in mister trump's yacht club have no idea how to replace them now that the littoral bateaux have been such expensive failures.....

I spent two years, two months and eleven days on one of the precursor "macnamara's folly" knox class FF.....dead in the water was to be expected quite frequently.....

Why dead in the water? Engine issues?

yep.....boiler and aux-1 s.s.t.g.'s problems more than engines.....engineering failures when you least expect them !
thankfully, a-gang and electrical central were on the ball and aux-2 quickly came on-line for electricity but it could get rough, side-ways in the troughs until the snipes got the thing running again.....

Re: The rest of the story please.
I served on destroyers back in the early 70's, first one was an old Fram1 DD, the second was a DDG.
I've been tuned into anything new that's coming out in the fleet in recent years, although I don't always understand their designed capabilities. They appear to have less armaments then earlier escort type ships, but then again, looks can be deceiving, especially with the high tech weapon systems they must have.
Engineering systems on these ships have always had problems. I can remember "dropping the load" multiple times on both ships, thankfully this never happened while on the Gun Line in Vietnam.
I hope we (the U.S.) aren't hurting for reliable destroyers, or whatever they're called nowadays.

I've always wanted to be buried at sea. Feed the fishes. I have always loved the ocean and spent much of my free time on the water. Put me in a bag that decomposed quickly, wrap 30 feet of anchor chain around my ankles and dump me over the side...

My same thoughts on the subject. I never understood why people got so carried away with spending one dime more than they had to for a funeral. I want the cheapest, least hassle my family can find. And just dump my ashes in the woods when they're done.Blaine wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 7:17 pm I'd like to be cremated in a cheap cardboard box. Whatever VA and Social Security will cover. recently a drifting sailboat was discovered with a decomposed body aboard. i'd be ok that way . . . no matter though, the second I leave this tent I am the presence of the LORD.... my family will know when they stop getting postcards from me.

I've made it very clear that I want something that would compare favorably to those markers in the Plain of Giza. And I am confident that my wishes will be respected in death just as they have been, so meticulously, in life...

Funerals are for the living. Some to show how much they cared for the deceased, some to show how much money the have (life insurance?). And some probably to relieve a guilty conscious......My same thoughts on the subject. I never understood why people got so carried away with spending one dime more than they had to for a funeral. I want the cheapest, least hassle my family can find. And just dump my ashes in the woods when they're done.
