I don't know what, if any, tactical error there was, but it just goes to show that even a Thanksgiving evening isn't a "condition white" event...
Sad.

Doc,
My condolences on the loss of your friend.
It sounds as if he had lived a good and full life, but was lost to his family much too soon.

That's horrible. Bad enough any day, but for his whole family to be there and see this happen is just terrible. What a loss, and I hope those involved were caught and are punished to the fullest extent of the law.

I think he was home alone; it was Wednesday evening. He was evidently getting set up to entertain the next day.

My condolences to his surviving family and friends. May his murderers be caught and punished. It is a terrible comment on our current world that anyone would be killed in a home invasion on Thanksgiving.

Also a good reason to have a protective dog in the house.
(Probably the only place I can't put hands on a weapon is the bathroom....)

About the only time that I am more than an arms length from a firearm in my home is when I am in the shower. There is a revolver in a Zip Loc bag with a rust preventative in there stashed in the bathroom. It is stashed out of sight. My next door neighbor was the victim of a home invasion robbery recently. They do not have dogs, and had Beto yard signs.

Re: to you crazy people who have guns stashed all over your house...
the bathroom is the only room in the house I would never consider NOT having guns... I was told by someone who knew that jailhouse u. teaches criminals to attack people when they ARE in the bathroom... so I've been told .... I take it back... I never consider any room in my house to be secure if I am not already armed.
sorry for your loss Doc . . .
Re: to you crazy people who have guns stashed all over your house...
If you are going to stash guns around the house the bathroom is one of the more important places to have one.

I simply cannot afford a walk-in safe because I've spent all my money on guns.

Re: to you crazy people who have guns stashed all over your house...
By having a gun in every room or wherever you are shows you are living in fear. I'm not going to live that way. Having one in the shower with you is asinine. In my home I will be in condition white as we need that break from being in orange once we step off of our adobe. The smart idea is to have other things that warn you in plenty of time so you can get to your gun in a reasonable amount of time. Multiple dogs are the cheapest solution. Combining dogs, technology, common sense and preventative measures is the best.----6
Re: to you crazy people who have guns stashed all over your house...
Nope, not living in fear. I know what it is to be afraid. Try stepping off the swing landing trainer knowing that the Black Hat on the rope is not strong enough to hold you. Knowing that you are going to fall ten feet straight down on your back is frightening. It injured the Black Hat when it jerked her into the support post. I was unconscious for a short while.
I am not afraid that someone might break in to my house, but I am not going to invite the situation.

Re: to you crazy people who have guns stashed all over your house...
I feel bad for your colleague doc, no one asks for that, and sometimes no amount of preparation helps.I recall in afghanistan with a lot of vehicles rolling across IED's there was this mentality if you were on your game you could 'see the signs' to prevent this. Watch the road, look for sign, see the shifty guy watching you. Fact is all you can do is stack most the odds in your favor, be diligent most of the time, and do your best when the time comes. Sometimes you still dont win first place. I am with sixgun on the multistash idea. If someone's risk of infiltration is that high, Id hope their security solution meets it in all ways, not just by increasing weapon access. I got nothing against fellas who want guns in every room of course, guns look nice wherever they are.

Re: to you crazy people who have guns stashed all over your house...
Yeah. The 'layered' approach seems best:
1. live a low-profile lifestyle so you're an unlikely target
2. have a perimeter fence
3. have several outside dogs
4. have motion detectors, floodlights, and cameras outside
5. have difficult to break through doors and windows
6. have an inside dog
and
7. have firearms handy (one on your person always or a bunch of 'em everywhere - or both)
and
8. be alert...!

Re: to you crazy people who have guns stashed all over your house...
I guess having guns all over the house is ok if you do have several kinds of canine and technology types of security.
However, if you're a little deaf and have nothing to alert you of an intruder, loaded guns laying around the house, even if hidden, would not make me feel any safer. I don't want to be shot by anything but being shot by my own gun just adds insult to injury.

I agree with this. I think exposed firearms invite unintended consequences. But, so do kitchen knives. . . and many many people are killed with kitchen knives. Even in Britain.. I agree that dogs are a valuable and high tech security solution.gamekeeper wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 7:52 am I guess having guns all over the house is ok if you do have several kinds of canine and technology types of security.

No intruder is going to get in and then out of my house without getting his ankles shredded by a Chihuahua and a ChihWeenie. The rat terrier would just want to play.

I won't go into details, but there are many ways to have firearms easily accessible, yet completely concealed. Some furniture companies make stuff just for that, but a creative carpenter can do the same, or better.Grizz wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 12:18 pmI agree with this. We have wild mice around. I often carry a mousegun for protection, especially after eating peanut butter. Mice like to attack and chew off any part of you that has the scent of peanuts. I carry my Assault Rifle when there appear to be Assaults hiding nearby. I use a machine gun for protection from machines.
