Bagged a Little 9 Point, Yesterday with the BLR

Post by Lastmohecken »

I bagged this little 9-point, on the opener of gun season, Saturday morning. I probably should have let him walk, but a co-worker wanted some deer meat for our upcoming Chile feast at work. I ought to set up differently. My tree stand overlooks a narrow field on my place, and sometimes they cross on one side of me and sometimes on the other side of me, about a hundred yards each way, so I have to keep my head on a swivel, because they are usually on the run, as they cross the open ground. Unfortunately, I rarely have time to judge antler size all that close. No brag, but I shot this one on the run at about a hundred yards, he dropped instantly, as I made a really good shot on him.

I love that old Browning BLR, as it's always been so natural to me for that kind of shooting. I had to drag him back to the house with my side by side. I just ain't strong enough to load one by myself, anymore. Another reason I hunt that spot. I like to be able to drive up to them and hook on and drag them home.

I seen a much bigger one, same day in the evening, but he was running flat out and I didn't see him in time to get a well aimed shot off. I am going to set up differently for him, next time, and hope I get lucky.

Excellent.
That's the thing about most leverguns, they swing like a good shotgun in moving targets.

Nice. No need to sound apologetic. It might not be a giant, but it is meat now. If we all had to only kill the biggest deer it wouldn't be all that much fun. Besides, there are no guarantees in hunting.

Way to go! Looks surprisingly like the one I killed last year with my 73 SRC. He will eat good.

Yes, it's scoped. I have an old Leupold 2 x 7 vari-x II on it, which is one of my favorite scopes because it provides a good field of view on 2 power, but can be cranked up to 7 power which is plenty, usually. It's in .308 Win. It's about a 1990 vintage, steel frame, before they come out with the folding hammers and later the Alloy frames.
