I wish he didn't use the politicized term 'assault rifle', but I think Mel Tappan actually used it for the carbine-sized guns to differentiate them from the rifle-sized 'battle rifles', and I actually like that usage.

the rifle-sized 'battle rifles', and I actually like that usage
I call my battle rifle my battle rifle.

I like that usage too.

I just hope I don't have to.
