New Mossberg Leveraction
I picked one up yesterday, and I got to shoot it today. Nice gun. Looks like a 94, but with some modifications. I am hoping to get out in the next couple of days to really shoot it some. Anyone else shot one of these yet.

It is top eject, right?
Can you mount a scope on it anyway? And, if so, how high up does the scope need to be (what size rings)? Looks like it has "scope bridges" for a scope, but it is top eject???

I wonder what the Henry people were thinking when they decided to bring out their .30-30 at the same time that Mossberg is bringing this one out, and when the Winchester/FNH folks are rumored to be bringing back the model 94. The Henry .30-30 in blued steel will retail for somewhere around $550, which is a lot more than the MSRP of the Mossberg. I doubt that these guys were all unaware of each other's plans, although maybe they really caught each other by surprise. The Henry .30-30 in brass does not appeal to me personally, but it might appeal to others, but it will cost twice as much retail compared to the new Mossberg. I don't really "need" another .30-30, particularly given the cost of ammo, but who knows... If the new Mossberg can be scoped on top (not using side-mount brackets), and it looks like it can be top-scoped, then maybe I need one more than I originally thought.

Tax and all I paid $420.00 I didn't haggle much because I wanted to get it. I am really impressed with this gun. It is side eject, and it really elects well. The mounting of a scope would be real easy. The screw holes lign up like a bolt action. It is stronger than the 94, and I think can withstand more pressure. I shot my hottest load and no real pressure signs. I thought at first the safety would be in the way, but the way they positioned it you don;t forget about at least for me. When it is in the safe position you feel it under your hand, when it is in the fire position you don't notice it. It is a big safety. The fit is really nice on the metal to wood. I found two spots that when you put light behind them you can see a little gap, but the fore end is perfect to me. It even has the fit into the front of the receiver like the pre 64 winchesters had. It is smoother than the 94, and the stroke of the lever is shorter. I like the trigger. It is better than the 94 in my opinion, and seeing that I am a total 94 nut.... The blue is nice. The top is open, but not as much as a 94 the receiver on the back comes over similar to a bolt action would. The only thing I would have done differently would to have polished, or jeweled the bolt. I can;t wait to hear what someone else says about the gun. Winchester is going to be coming out with the 94 again in 2009, and if they don;t make some changes this gun will out sale it. I am going to do an article on it soon, adn I will post all the pictures I can this weekend the weathers bad or I would have more to show, and tell. Accuracy is good with this gun. I hit as well with it as I do with my Marlin, and my 94's.

Nice levergun. Thanks for the pics and review!
I think they need to have a walnut option and chamber these for 307 or 308 Marlin and 356.
I just bought a 336RC and having it converted to 356, so I'm cashed for the time being.
Good to see Mossberg doing this though and they priced them right. Good American rifle.

Shooting Times magazine says that the front and rear scope mounts are the Weaver #403 bases. Does that help?

Have to agree about the 308 Marlin chambering.
I would also lobby for .357 and .45-70. An action that strong oughta be able to handle .45-70 easy, though they may not be able to compete with Marlin on that. But at least one pistol caliber, anyway.
I got it! .454 Casull!
Or better yet, they could be the first to offer the .460Mag!
Just think what a splash that would make at the cowboy games! You could shoot yer .45colts at the short ranges, and the 460 at the distance targets, alongside the 45-70 marlins!
Okay, got a little carried away there, sorry...
Still it's good to see some details about it, finally!

Is it not possible that the rear bridge might add considerable stiffness and strength to the receiver? I'm no engineer, but it sort of looks that way to me.blackhawk44 wrote:Sorry Gryphon, but the Mossy is basically a Win 94 with a bridge over the rear which means that the .454 and .460 are out. The 1894 locking block is at the rear of the action and cannot handle those pressures. USRA announced the .454 once but could never produce it.

Re: New Mossberg Leveraction
Hi L.F.Combs
I have a Win 94ae and it takes a hard pull on the lever to rack a round. My Puma .44mag can rack a round with one finger easy on the lever.
Question.. is the Mossberg 30-30 more like the Win or Puma? Thanks

Re: New Mossberg Leveraction
Thanks everyone for the kind words, and to answer the last question the gun is closer to the Puma, but it is really closer to a Marlin. As for the strenght issue, and the .454. The action is similar to a bolt gun in that the face of the round bolt goes into the front strap of the receiver, and with the added strap across the rear which does add strength to the gun very few changes would need to be made to the gun to make it possible to handle the cartridge. If not a fully loaded version then a slightly reeduced version like I use in my Puma .454. It may be a long shot, but I think it can be done if they do as Winchester did with the Big Bore. Make the falling block in the back thicker, pressure relief the bolt as with many bolt guns, and make the gun in stainless. I have been reloading in mine, and working with one of my favorite .30-30 loads I have been able to go past the Winchester 94, and I think the Marlin 336 in pressure. The cases have more to go before the signs say to me stop. I am now pushing a 180 grain round nose well past 2200 fps. I am going to scope mine as soon as I can get my hands on the weaver bases. I am going to do a great deal more with the gun as soon as possible. I think this would also be a great gun to convert to .30-30 Ackley improved. I think you could really take the .30-30 to new levels with this gun.

Good info, Mr. Combs, thanks! But I'm not really a bolt action guy, what does "pressure relief the bolt" mean?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: New Mossberg Leveraction
I one thing I also noted when I picked one up in the store. Is that it seemed heavier than the 94. So it must have a little more steel in it.
Re: New Mossberg Leveraction
Tell you what I have noticed from the excellemt pics, there does not seem as much steel around the locking bolt or is that an additional bolt?
Looks like they bought alot of Winnies tools to me, fine looking gun, they gotta sell. Shame about that band behind the dovetailed front sight.

i checked one out at gander mountain
and was not impressed at all...fit and finish was
not to good. Maybe it was just that particular gun...
They had a bunch of marlins sitting right next to it...
and there was no comparison...

Re: New Mossberg Leveraction
Well, the news is mixed for me, at least. As noted, the hammer is a rebounder but I have no problem with that and it's an "angle eject" configuration. For me, I thought it handled very well with good balance, trigger good, and, while I will eventually mount a receiver sight as I have on my Winchester 94 & 95, with the open iron sights and my nearly 82 year old eyes, managed to zero the sights at 25 yards with less than half box of cartridges and the two holes in that little 1" black circle in the 10 ring were less than 1/2" apart (center to center). It's D/T for optical sights but I tend to think a scope doesn't fit the image of a lever gun for me - YMMV.
It's a great shooter!
Now, the bad news.
Before I had shot the remainder of the cartridges in the box, it stopped extracting the empty cases !!!
Examination revealed the extractor had bent itself out straight before I got through the entire first box (20) of ammo.
It is now residing with the dealer awaiting a new extractor. He tells me Mossberg has a new shotgun out that is breaking firing pins so fast they are hard pressed to produce replacements in a timely manner. It's a shame, I think, because I sure liked the little 94 clone and the way it shot and handled otherwise. I'll report when it's fixed and how long the fix takes and lasts.
Meanwhile, I'll have to settle for shooting my Winchester 95 30-06 or my Winchester 94 30-30 or my BL22 rimfire - life is tough.
I almost forgot - the price I paid was $385.00 (plus our sales tax).

Re: New Mossberg Leveraction
what does "pressure relief the bolt" mean? This refers to holes, or openings to allow for pressure to escape. The best example of this is on Weatherby's.
there does not seem as much steel around the locking bolt or is that an additional bolt? The bolt is different than the Winchester 94, in that is is rounded similar to a Marlin.

Re: New Mossberg Leveraction
I just read Field&Stream newsletter that this rifle has been included in an article by David Petzal on the 11 most accurate rifles of 2007 and 2008. It is listed I at #8 in the list, and is the only Lever action on the list. Number 8 in a field of bolt guns!!!!! He also mentions that the gun showed extreme sensitivity to different bullet weights. I found the same thing in mine. Oh and the articel I did is on gunblast.com. I will be doing an updated one in September for a local site. This is nice gun, and on top of Hornady's leverevolution ammo its agood time for levergunners.

Dang!...I was all set to order a new CZ Bobwhite in 28ga. & you went & dunnit LF! Dang your hide!
Now I gotta put the CZ on hold & hightail it down to my pusher for one of these. (I'm a Mossy fan too). $385.00 is a steal in my book. That little honey will be puttin' in some saddle time this summer in the Pinenut mts. after some load devl.
Now if they only made it in 38-55...I'd buy that one instead.
Great post LF...nice pics too!
Best to y'all...

I know the feeling. I am looking at scopes right now for mine. I have a feeling it is going to take the place of my other .30-30 in the woods.

I have the XS low mount ghost ring sight and am getting the #403 low mount Weaver base for it - now - I hope it doesn't take too long to get the replacement extractor and that the new replacement part is more durable than the original.

They need to chamber it in 308 Marlin. I'd say 307 Win, but the Marlin round probably has a better chance of survival.... or not...
Nice carbine though - modern 94 basically.

Good luck on the replacement part. I hope this doesn't prove to be a problem for such a promising new gun.

Thanks - I will be optimistic - Mossberg has been around long enough and we all slip up now and then - at least I do. My dealer tells me they are having problems with the firing pin on their new shotgun. I'm confident they will come through and I sure did like shooting that little lever gun - it's a real joy !!!L.F.Combs wrote:Good luck on the replacement part.
