New gun on market -- Kel Tec p17 22lr

Post by wm »

https://www.ballisticmag.com/2019/09/12 ... irst-look/

IMO Pro
Price
Capacity
Lightweight/compact
comes with 3 mags
set up for suppressor
Can add a light

Cons
Ugly (but I could warm up to it if was accurate and reliable)
Paddle mag release (blech)

Key questions …… is it accurate and reliable.

Knowing Kel Tec it will be …… in a year or two or three. Kel Tec has good ideas but they don't often execute them well on the first try.

The Kel Tec price point for their plinker and woods running companion is less then $200. Other choices in that price range include the Ruger Wrangler, Heritage SA, Phoenix Arms rimfire auto and maybe one or two other offerings that I am unaware of.

Now if you take a long view and think in terms of later re sale value and cost of maintenance I think the clear winner is the Ruger Wrangler. Enjoyment is hard to quantify and of course varies from person to person. Some people just find the process of loading and unloading a single action tedious & upsetting. But IMO if you are rushing through shooting your box of 22lr, trying to devour those cartridges as fast you can pull the trigger, then I think you are missing the charm of plinking which is all about slowing down and clearing your mind. The Single action gives one time to calmly focus and perhaps enjoy a little conversation between strings of fire with external associates or internal conscience or a eternal guardian angel.

looks like Kel-Tec has another clunker... take a look at the face of the reviewer on Youtube after is doesn't fire, again. I'm with JimT and wm, can't go wrong with a Ruger Single-Six, I have a new replacement coming in a couple of weeks (sold my last one four years ago, can you say stupid)... :)

Kel Tecs are made here in Florida. There's a reason why people call them jamomatics.
