I have been looking for an older (non-safety/non-rebounding hammer) Marlin 39A. This rifle is about 200 miles down the road and I can look at it before I close the deal. They are not real common around here.
What do you think? Price? What should I look for when examing the rifle? The wood looks a little too blonde for my tastes in the picture.

I couldn't open the link without being a member. I love my 30 year old 39A, I don't think I would be able to wear it out in 3 lifetimes, and that's not because I haven't used it. If I didn't have one already I would be looking for one. IMHO the safety and rebounding hammer have ruined the new ones. Maybe you could give us some more info. Don't forget what driving 400 miles is going to cost you these days.

I know what you mean about their scarcity. I looked for almost 2 years before I found my Mountie 39a somewhat locally.
Anyway, If you're thinking about driving the 400 mile round trip, that $350 easily becomes $400 plus, and a whole lot of time.
Right now theres one on Gunbroker for $350 shipped, so with a xfer fee I'm doubting it'll go over $380.

...and I don't think he even knows it...Walks around with a half-assed grin...If he feels fear, he don't show it. Just rides into hell and back again.
In my area $350-$400 would be an average price for a 39a. If it was in 98% condition, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it in that price range. I don't actually see many used guns that I would call 98%. Mounties are extremely rare around here, my father-in-law has one I'd love to get a hold of. Of course he would love to get a hold of my 1895.
I've factored in the cost of driving 400 miles. I've proposed to the seller that we meet half way if I decide to buy it. If I drive my Honda it would cost me about $26 in gas for 200 miles. As far as time lost, I've got plenty of time to waste. I'm retired.meanc wrote:GTO

I have asked him to send me more detailed photos, plus I can examine the gun before I hand over the cash.

I guess it would be worth the drive then. Hopefully you get to pick it up and let us know how she shoots.

You guys are a bad influence!:P Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever read of anyone on this board advising AGAINST buying a lever gun!sobenk wrote:just do it
I'm waiting for a reply from the seller, but I am inclined to "pull the trigger" on the deal if he can meet me in the next couple of days.

Plus it has a gold trigger. While showing it off, you can point to it and say "look, it has a gold trigger!"
No idea if he's overcharging for it, but how much do you really care anyway?
I can tell from the way you describe it, you're sold on it. That means you'd regret not getting it, and would never miss the cash.
And if there is anything wrong with it, you can send it back to Marlin to make it right. Then you'll have the gun you want. Life'll be good. Am I right?

I think Hobie quietly deletes those posts, in return for a cut of the sale price - how ELSE do you think he could afford all those neat guns he tells us about...?66GTO wrote:You guys are a bad influence!:P Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever read of anyone on this board advising AGAINST buying a lever gun!sobenk wrote:just do it

I've been meaning to ask - how can the 39a feed so "flawlessly" with that skinny little ejection port...? Don't empties get stuck in there from time to time...?

There's a reason Marlin has controlled the rimfire levergun market since the introduction of the Model 1891........
