Well ain't this some Stuff!
Made it out to the range this morning for the first time in months and this happens!
Eight rounds in something wasn't right. I opened the cylinder and tried to extract the moon clip and the whole thing just about came out.
Factory ammo too. Guess it's going back to S&W.
My new $200 surplus Beretta Model 81 went through 100 rounds without a single issue!
Fun little pistol.

It's got about 150 rounds through it and all factory ammo. This particular batch was Armscor. Really disappointed.

If it is like the double action revolvers I've taken apart, I think there's just a pin that keeps that all in place, and it probably slipped out. Not anything inherently bad about the gun or design though.

Did you try to screw the cylinder back to the crane?

The whole assembly moves back and forth. Nothing that I can see is missing or unscrewed.

Re: Well ain't this some Stuff!
I do believe there should be a little cylinder stop stud at the bottom rear corner of the cylinder window that stops the rearward movement of the cylinder.

Good catch Joe, my S&Ws have that too.
Will be interesting to see a close-up of that area on Jason's.

I happened to be close to my safe when reading this so I grabbed my 686. Indeed Joe is correct. There is a small raised piece on the frame that stops the cylinder.

You can see the cylinder retainer on my old 1917.

It's there, just different than the old style. Apparently it's not thick enough to prevent the issue. I have other N frames, current mfg, that this doesn't happen with even with heavy loads.
This is a factory issue that needs to go back for repair, I've already contacted S&W and will be receiving a repair / return statement.

Aw, just build it up with a little TIG welding and then file it to shape....

Jason,
That new design looks like it might be a spring loaded cyl stop. Perhaps a thorough cleaning might cure the problem.

Will do Ray.
I just got an email back from S&W. They want me to send it back. Hopefully I’ll have it back before too long.

Re: Well ain't this some Stuff!
I don't think that it did. I just mentioned it that they weren't heavy or improperly loaded handloads. That's all.
