Tang Sight Rossi Mod 92

Post by clubkey »

The Tech Specs on this sight say "No Gunsmithing Required" is that correct? Have any of you Gentlemen mounted this sight on your Rossi Model 92's and what is your opinion of this sight?

Midway info says "out of stock, no backorder"?

I bet Nate Kiowa Jones can pop in with some useful info here.

Look at your rifle and if it's drilled & tapped for a tang sight it will have two screw holes. One bigger screw attaches the rifles action to the stock and the smaller screw just plugges the hole until you add the tang sight. When you recieve your Marbles Tang sight it will include the hardware needed for installation.
The problem you'll run into is the height of the front sight in regulating point of impact to the load combination.
I use Marbles Peep Tang sights on all my leveraction rifles and I really like them for ease of adjustment for various ranges and clear sight picture. Besides they look traditional.
May I suggest zeroing the rifle with the original sights making sure the front sight is centered. When installing the Peep Tang make sure the base of the sight is centered on the tang if you have to drill and tap the second hole. Find center on the Tang sight adjustments before installation. In other words count the number of clicks of horizonal adjustment then adjust for center.
Good luck and enjoy.....

No problem at all. My Rossi (Navy Arms) short rifle was drilled and tapped for the tang sight and the Marbles fit right on and the front sight was just fine as is (Hight wise, I dont like the width of it).

I did bugger up the front screw . I called Marbles for a replacement and they said get it from Brownells and gave me Brownells part number.
Gave me an excuse to make another order from my favorite distributer BROWNELLS.
Enjoy your new sight!!

The "no gunsmithing" would only apply if your rifle's upper tang has the second hole, D/T's & plugged, 1 1/2"-2" ahead of the tang screw.

If it's there, that hole, and the tang screw hole - with the longer tang screw supplied with the sight - are used to secure the sight to the tang.

If it's not, then that one hole would need to be D/T'd (gunsmith for most folks).

When using a tang sight, the issue front sight will be fine - unless a front sight change is desired due to the want for a different type bead, etc.

The rear barrel sight can either be removed - and a dovetail slot filler blank (ordered at the same time as the tanger) installed - or changed out to a folding rear so that the barrel sight may be zeroed for short(er) range(s), and the tang sight for long(er) range(s).

I stalk with the barrel sight up, and the tanger folded - then, if game is spotted at a distance, I have time to fold the barrel sight and raise the tang sight for the shot. YMMV.

If your Rossi is an octagon barrel rifle it will be tapped for the second screw. If it's a round barrel carbine it will need to be D&T-ed for the second screw. The Marble tang will work with your existing front, carbine or rifle, no problem.

I like this one. it too is W&E adjustable but sturdier built and is a clone of the one Win used on the 73's and some 92's.

Pete,
Tell me about this gun. Is it one of the WWG prototypes with the twin locking bolts like the 92 and 86 ?

I picked up four of these Taurus sights (they sell for their model 62) for my Rossi "family" and I think I got them for around $30, actually, from CheaperThanDirt or SportsmansGuide or one of those 'closeout/overstock' places. They have windage (unlike the Lyman) and seem to be a clone of the Marble sights.

I know that it is heresy to buy a 'generic' sight vs. a Marble's, but I couldn't resist the price, and they have all been sturdy and reliable. One of them had one of the detents I touched up with a needle file, to make the clicks more definite.

Unfortunately, it looks like Midway says "manufacturer dropped" and I don't see them any longer on the other websites.

As Nate says, the octagonal guns are already drilled and tapped (mine were metric, and I DID have to get a different screw at the local Ace Hardware), but the round barrel ones required drilling and tapping, which isn't hard if you simply take the time to use a center punch and really get the hole centered, then drill it with a smaller bit first, then the final size for your tap. I tapped mine metric so they'd all be the same.

Correct-o-mundo ! It's a first-year of production (1978-early 79) .375 Big Bore 94, that I D/T'd for the tanger & installed a folding rear barrel sight ILO the issue non-folding long-leaf (IIRC).

Tha't right  The big bores had the beefed up lug area. I looked for that WWG prototype gun they had on their wedsite but couldn't find it. The sides looked like the big bore 94 but it had twin lugs like the 92/86.

Thanks Gents for your replies I appreciate your help. Earlier I ordered one of these sights and got the sight w/two posts (Standard & Long Range) at a much better price than Midway's offering because of a job related discount. However, I didn't stop there cause I also ordered a new Puma Model 92 16" Bbl Trapper 357 Mag. Guess that kinda tells ya how impressed I am with my previously purchased Puma Model 92 357 Mag 20".

Steve,

My current rifle and the one I want to use the tang sight on is a recent production Puma Model 92 20" round barrel 357 Mag carbine and the tang is factory drilled and taped for the tang sight. Maybe I got lucky or maybe the factory is drilling and tapping all new production guns I don't know, but it looks like I'll be ordering another parts kit from you very soon. :D

All have a great night.
