New Winchester Book On 1895 Lever Actions
Once in awhile you get to assist in a publication of a book, This one is about a much overlooked lever action, the Winchester 1895. Rob Kassab and Brad Dunbar have been working on this book for over a decade. Every year at Cody, I would quiz them on their progress and finally this year it is finished. It is an extremely informative book on the 1895 and loaded with pictures and charts. I was pleased to find they used a picture of my 1895 in the rare chambering of 40-72...

Got mine. Appreciate the direct link. Love me some '95 ... though I lack one in my current herd. Hoping for one in 35 WCF some day.

I have a 1895 on order. Winchester is making a limited run of them. Now I need to get the book. If someone would make a run of Savage model 99s, I would find the funds to get one.

Rimfire,
I have an extra 95 -An unfired Deluxe safe queen.
Of course it is a .405 WCF, not one of the snowflake calibers some shoot.
I have only worked the action once, but of course 86er did too when I let him handle it.

Ever shoot a 7.62x54r with a curved butt plate? It will get your attention!
And before someone says it, the Mosin stock is wider and far more pleasant.

Nope, but this 1886 .45-90 gets my attention when firing DG loads of 450 grain Kodiaks at 2150 FPS. You can imagine what it does to the targeted animals!

Re: New Winchester Book On 1895 Lever Actions
Hello
I'm a co-author of the new Model 1895 book and have been reading and learning from this forum off and on for a number of years. Thank you for your enthusiasm for the Model 1895 and our book. It's been a long project, and one of the benefits has been meeting fellow '95 collectors and shooters along the way.
We were fortunate to get a small number of books shipped directly to Cody from the printer for the show last weekend. Most of those were spoken for ahead of time also. I'm happy to say that the bulk of our books have now arrived from the printer and we are packaging books and printing off shipping labels. I sincerely hope you enjoy your books.
Thanks again Shrapnel!

Welcome aboard Brad. I have not seen my book yet, but if Shrapnel approves, I will likely approve also.
BTW, did you see my 1895 .405 leaning on my dead Cape Buff in the pic to the right?
Same 400 grain Woodleigh bullet and velocity as the 450/400.

That looks like big medicine. A very successful hunter encouraged me to try .30-220 Woodleigh soft nose bullets a few years ago and they have also been very good so far.

Brad,
I posted info on your 1895 book on two other forums:
Accurate Reloading - Levergun forum
Shooters Forum - Levergun section
I tried to post on 24 hour Campfire Lever- guns section, but their use of ads and slow response made it nearly impossible, so after a while, I gave it up. Besides, if they are REAL lever gun folk, they will be members here!
I also tried to post on Africa Hunting, but found no logical place, sooo,

Congratulations on completing the project, Brad. And bravo on the 220-grain loads in the '06. I'm a big fan of heavy for caliber.
Re: New Winchester Book On 1895 Lever Actions
Thanks again guys.
I've actually been loading .30-40 a lot over the last few years too and hunt with a '95 TD Sporting Rifle made in 1910. The Model 1895 cartridges are very interesting and the book has a lengthy cartridge chapter with original WRACo drawings, documents and history for every standard cartridge chambered for the model. We really tried to include as much information as possible, whether that was in the manufacture and anatomy of the arms themselves or the great history of that time period.

Re: New Winchester Book On 1895 Lever Actions
I got mine in the mail on Saturday. I'm about 1/2 way through it. Fantasic book ... tons of images of internals as well as the external views. Really helpful in showing the different engineering changes over the years. Really high quality printing and binding it seems. I didn't realize the take-down version didn't come along until 1908 (invented) / 1910 (cataloged). Love the Zane Grey engraved rifle ... not by him, but his personal rifle. Pretty heavy carving into the metal.
... I love poetry, long walks on the beach, and poking dead things with a stick.

Thanks guys, glad you like the book!
Rimfire McNut: I used to own one of the 35 WCF rifles pictured in the book. I enjoyed shooting the rifle but it didn't have an aperture sight, and I do better with one of those. Good luck in your search. A great cartridge for sure. Sometimes underappreciated but historically significant for Winchester in my opinion.

Griff,
We can cure your lack of 1895 experience in a jiffy!
We can meet over at Ricky's range and you can shoot my 1895 .405.
If you like the 300 grain ammo, I may even spare you a couple rounds of my 400 grain DG ammo.
PS I felt the same as you about the 1895 until a friend asked me to shoot his 1895 .405 to check the factory iron sight adjustment. Two shots into the bulls eye and I began looking to buy one of my own in .405.(now I have two 1895 .405 rifles and one .405 double rifle.)

I'll plan on that in Oct., while I recover from knee replacement, (if the VA gets off their duff). It'll be cooler, & I'll welcome the excursion!

Griff,
Good plan; cooler will be better.
I need to practice before 86er, my son and I go Pronghorn hunting in October.
Interesting thought - I have shot more pronghorns with iron sighted lever guns than with scoped bolt actions!
Good luck with the knee repairs.

Re: New Winchester Book On 1895 Lever Actions
I look forward to the book, especially any pix or text on military use of the '95. Found an interesting picture of a Mexican rebel firing a '95 Musket at Mexican Federal troops in Mexicali during the Magonista Rebellion in 1911 ("won the battle, lost the war"). Probably a .30-40 but who knows--by 1911 there were .30-03s and .30-06s out there, too, and many (probably most) of the Magonistas' volunteers ("Partido Liberal Mexicano") were Americans or Mexican-Americans.
'95s were widely used by rebel forces in the Mexican Revolution, counter-revolutions, and the various civil wars that resulted from them. Most were .30-40s, since Krags and their ammunition were available both under and over the table in the years 1910-24. Most of the Mexican-used '95s I've seen "in the flesh" or in historic pix were .30-40 SRCs. '94 "trienta-trienta" SRCs were more common by far--almost "standard issue" in Northern Mexican rebel "armies"--but there were lots of '95s, too.
We had a '95 .30-40 Standard Sporting rifle on the ranch when I was a little kid in the late 1940s. It had the annoying habit, at first, of jamming if you filled the magazine full. Then we figured out that there wasn't a war on and deer required only a three shooter at most. Problem solved.

Re: New Winchester Book On 1895 Lever Actions
Rusty,
Yes, I have - on one occasion in New Mexico, the guide placed me behind a cedar tree less than 50 yards from a favorite pronghorn fence crossing and he drove out of sight and sneaked back to observe. Another guide parked his pickup just inside the pasture and sat there about 1/2 mile away. This made a breeding buck nervous and it slowly fed toward the fence crossing, passing to my left about 15-20 yards away. Shooting my 1895 .405 left handed(so my quarry could not see me), I scored a double lung shot at an estimated 15 yards; both guides saw it all and were pleased that their plan had worked; me too!
I posted the pix and hunt story here way back then.

That's a subject of great interest to me as well. There's a chapter on the Model 1895 in Mexico during that time period with a lot of old photos. We received a lot of help from several university and library archives while researching, and show some original documentation on Winchester's arms sales and some others from the company's dealings with agents of Madero, and later the forces of Villa and Carranza.Mike Armstrong wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2019 11:00 am I look forward to the book, especially any pix or text on military use of the '95. I'm always impressed with the number of special order and deluxe rifles (of many models) found in those old photos as well, along with all of the different configurations--like NRA Muskets. Lots of Savage 1899s too.

Re: New Winchester Book On 1895 Lever Actions
I've seen a few Savage 99 SRCs in Mexico, all .30-30s. The only .300 rifle (not sure which Savage 1899 model, but had a 26" barrel it looked like to me) was in a picture of a young caballero fighting on th side of the Cristeros in Jalisco in the early 1920s anti-clerical conflict . He looked like a rich kid who had volunteered to fight against the new PRI (Party of Institutional Revolution) government.
All lever actions of any sort, plus any rifle that fired Winchester cartridges (Colt Lightning .44-40s for example), were called "oinches" (oh-een-chays) in Mexico when I was a college kid down there in the early '60s. That was close enough to Winchester for them! (You can imagine what they did with my surname...I finally settled for "Sr. Brazo").

My son gave me my birthday book today and it was well packed and totally new.
Very impressive binding and pictures and I hope to get to start reading it tomorrow (after morning chores) .

Re: New Winchester Book On 1895 Lever Actions
I guess I can say the sad news is that I probably won't ever purchase an 1895 due to the cost (and absence of need did I say those words...!), but the good news is the price of this book is so reasonable and the illustrations and text so good, that I will buy the book as my almost as good as the real thing option...
Besides, maybe as I thin the herd and get rid of some duplicates and other firearms in the future, I might stumble across one in a trade, and having read this book on my actually know what I'm doing when I trade for one....

I've began dropping hints around the house that this would make a good Christmas present for me.
I'm always on the lookout for Miroku made 1895's. I need to add one of the latest runs of .405's to my collection.

Nice photo. The legend lives on.
I'm really glad to read about the excitement you guys have for the book. Rob and I very grateful for your interest and hope you enjoy it very much.
I've been hunting with this .30-40 rifle for a few years off and on. I've shot a lot of different bullets and loads through it during that time, including the heavier jacketed bullets and several gas check cast bullets. For the sake of being thorough, I've been thinking about trying a Hawk bullet also. Do any of you have experience with their .30 cal bullets at .30-40 velocities?

Thanks got mine ordered, can't wait to see it, have been hearing about it for some time now.
Will have to purchase my own 1895, which I have wanted to do for a long time. Have bid on
several, but they can be spendy.

Re: New Winchester Book On 1895 Lever Actions
I just received the copy I ordered last week.
I know printing technology has gotten better and less expensive over the years (I remember when most books that even had illustrations had the 'plates' in the middle of the book in one section, and the really fancy books had 'color plates', often with fine paper next to them to protect them), but I just can't believe that you can print such a well-done book, bind it in leather, and sell it for such a low price.
I don't see how you can even come close to breaking-even.
Great book.

Glad to hear your book arrived safe and sound.
Rob and I wanted to have this book printed in the USA, and we were fortunate to find very competitive printing and binding here, and they did an excellent job. Part of the project also included having a box made to spec for shipping the book. It sounds like it's doing its job too. Thanks again!
