Just purchased a circa 1901 Parker DH 12 gauge on a 3 frame with factory original 28 inch barrels and a flat top rib . This flat rib thing was news to me until a month or two ago .
Talked to the genmtleman last night and he dropped by the house this morning around 10:00 . he brought along a very nice DH 12 gauge 2 frame 30 inch with a straight grip stock . But I couldn't afford both . to be honest I shouldn't have coughed up the cabbage for this one but what the heck

I know next to nothing about Parkers but I do recognize the superior fit and finish they exhibit. This new one seems to be a very high grade from the quality of the wood to the coverage of the engraving. Condition of this piece is very high on whatever scale you choose to grade it on. I like it.
I've noticed that I see more high grade Parkers with a lot of wear on them. Did the people who owned them just find them so good that they used them in spite of the obvious high cost?

This new gun is a DH which is considered the lowest of the high grades . Trojan was lowest then VH then PH then GH then DH followed in order by CH BH AH AAH and finally A-1 Special . Actually there was another grade higher then A-1 Special called the Invincable but they only made three in that grade so I usually don’t count it . As to wear it seems easier to find pristine guns in the higher grades . Generally pristine Trojans , VH’s , GH’s and to a lesser degree DH’s are a good bit harder to find . My personal opinion on usage is those that could afford the higher grades when new just looked at them as a tool or toy and used them . Now with that being said if I owned an A-1 Special now I would use it , BUT be careful about the way I used it , say shooting skeet , dove and maybe preserve birds .

While the grade and condition of this new to me gun is good they aren’t what I consider to be the important factors . This gun is built on the 3 frame which is standard for the 10 gauge . 10’s on a 2 frame are considered light and the 2 frame is considered standard for a 12 . The second aspect of this gun is barrel length , just about all the 3 frame 12 gauge guns are 32” or 34” with a couple at 30” . And finally this gun has what’s called a flat contour rib instead of being concave . Several people have told me they wouldn’t be surprised if this were the only 12 gauge 3 frame 28” with a flat rib in any grade . We’ll never know unless another is found as ten or twelve of the factory stock books are missing .and the stock books make no mention of frame size .

Guns international, just listed today. It's in great shape but you might have to sell the rest of your Parker's to pay for it!

Yeah I was told about it a couple days ago . Steve Barnett and I think he’s asking 70G’s . 34 or 36 inch barrels if memory serves . I’d just as soon find a nice 10 gauge EH or DH on a 6 frame .

Hmm how many pellets of 00 go into an 8?
Crosnoe has one as well on GI for about 10G’s less . Also DH and also fluid steel , think that one’s 36 or 38 inches . Dunno about 00 in an 8 gauge . Loading an 8 is not something I’ve broached the subject on yet . I do however have two loads a friend used that are not supposed to be hot if memory serves one is for 1 3/4 ounce and the other is for 2 1/4 ounce . Ones with Blue Dot and the others Universal Clays . I’d more then likely figure out how many 00 or any other size buck would fit in 1 3/4 as well as 2 1/4 and go from there . If I ever got one and did the buckshot thing I’d most likely start with #3 buck and work my way on up to 00000 .

Under the present circumstances at home it’s kinda oughtta the question for me to get out to the gun club and shoot any trap or skeet or 5 stand . But I have shot my new to me DH 12 a dozen or so times trimming tree limbs I can’t reach with the aluminum ladder and chain saw Guns choked very tight and you’d be amazed what an ounce and a quarter of #4’s will do at about 25-35 feet . The guns choked 35 points in the right barrel and 40 in the left barrel that means full and extra full .

I would usually say 28” barrels are to short for trap . But I shot with some friends one Friday evening a few years ago at a club in Bucks County PA . I didn’t bring a gun and borrowed a friends Browning Citori 28” field gun that was made before screw ins and was choked M&F anyway I think I broke 96 and was high man on the squad .

Length dont mean anything, my bunker gun is 29 &1/2! actually choke means more to people. All those serious 16 yd shooters HAVE to shoot 1&1/8 out of full choke- us bunker shooters shoot mod & full with 24 gram loads, yup 13/16's of an ounce and yes I have shot a 96 with my reloads.
Heck I've shot my 28 ga on the bunker with good results and I only shot my 28 for 16 yd .
Well it seems a third DH 10 gauge is on its way to Virginia ! Circa 1893 3 frame 30” factory original barrels . This one has the later DH engraving pattern slightly more filling then what’s in my two circa 1889 DH’s !

I was researching a couple things on an auction site yesterday, saw a Parker 28 ga listed... Only 49 grand!
49G’s that sounds like the Cary Grant 32” 28 gauge , think it was a DHE or CHE . I’ll be happy if I can sneak up on an mostly original VH or VHE 28 gauge with uncut barrels. And most likely that’ll cost me better then 12G’s . Dare I say a GH or GHE 28 would be about perfect for me as it seems I have an affection for the EH/GH Grade guns
