Yeah, a friend of mine who is a veterinarian was bragging about his job versus mine (family physician) and he makes about three times what I do (in his defense, he works hard), but what got me is that he gets to do so much cool stuff...
Physicians who are general internists just take care of medical things adults get, and even though family physicians take an extra year of residency training on top of what internal medicine does, so we encompass more gynecology and dermatology and pediatrics, we still don't do much in the way of surgeries other than skin cancers. Specialists who do endoscopy and surgery get to do 'cool stuff' but usually just within one organ system. Veterinarians, on the other hand, get to do orthopedic surgery in the morning, a gastroscopy at noon, chemotherapy in the afternoon, and never a boring day...!
When I expressed this, he said, "Yeah, but when I put that rod in the dog's leg, or cauterize a bleeding ulcer, or whatever, if I'm successful 90% of the time, I'm considered a decent veterinarian, and if I'm successful 99% of the time, I'm incredible - that's a failure rate of one in a hundred........what if one in a hundred of your patients died, doc...?....do you think you'd even be allowed to stay in practice....???

I’ve heard folks complain about what they make for decades. My response is simple. If you don’t like your salary quit and get a better job. There’s usually someone who’s more than willing to take your job.

i got a lot of respect for hardworking doctors, they earn their salary. What I'm not that crazy about is the salaries the top surgical specialists pull. Everyone assumes yeah they are on a couple hundred K, try into 5-10 million dollars a year. They charge 100K to put a cochlear implant in a deaf old folks ear. How can it cost 100k for that, its half a house price where I am. They need to reform a lot of this to get in line with countries like england. You know Australia got more deadly snakes than the US yet it costs only $100 for any antivenom. How can it be 20 times more expensive in the US.
