Good thoughts appreciated. Update.
Gang, I go in for a disk replacement/fusion at L 4-5 in the morning. The laminectomy two years ago hasn't worked and I risk crippling damage to the nerves that run my legs without a serious intervention.
My neurosurgeon in El Paso is highly regarded, and uses this really swell Israeli robot to help guide the work. If something goes sideways, I want you all to know I have valued my time here and the many conversations we have had over the years. I wish you all health, happiness, the love of family and friends -- and really tight groups.

Re: Good thoughts appreciated
Prayers up, and good luck as well.
Do your Physical Therapy, too....!!!!!
Don't hesitate to take pain meds - they will help you function better and improve faster.
If you have or get any neuropathy be sure to either take an 'activated' B-complex supplement like Thorne's MethylGuard Plus, or get your MTHFR alleles (both 677 and 1298) tested. Cheaper to just take the activated supplement, because it isn't much pricer than a good multivitamin, and if you don't have a methylation issue, it won't hurt to take it even if you don't "need" it.

Thanks so much, gang. Means a lot to go into this with friends rooting for a fella.
Doc, will note your advice. Would those alleles show up one way or another in a 23andMe DNA test?

Re: Good thoughts appreciated
Prayers up. Yes, take the pain meds. Especially for the first 24 to 48 hours. Healing is critical during that time, and it is faster and more complete if the healing progresses without pain during that time. Later, you and the Doctor can work out how much pain is acceptable so that you can function without being too affected by the medicines. The extremes of being at a 10 on the 1 to 10 scale or being at a 0 on the scale are neither one good while healing. About a 1 to 3 on the scale is where healing is fastest. It is also where it is easiest to transition to lower strength meds as healing progresses.
I will be awaiting good news.

Re: Good thoughts appreciated. Update.
Well, I have so far survived and the food is actually good, but where in the heck is that IPA I ordered? Guess the hydrocodone will have to do.
P.S. It's a good thing they waited until I was out cold before they put in that Foley catheter or there would have been a fight.

Heh, well wouldn't you know it but my lovely nurse Sara is checking my IVs when the tech comes in to pull the catheter. Deep breath on three he says, and out it comes. "I always wondered -- does that hurt?" Sara asks. I try to sputter a reply ...

Heck my last one was removed by a very young female. I think she was still in training. Maybe it’s some sort of right of passage for both nurse and patient.

Thanks friend. I hope it works out well, too, as I drew a cow elk tag for early December and plan to hunt with heavy handloads in a Bisley in .45 Colt.

.45, mine is a stainless model with 5 1/2-inch barrel. Should have it by the time I am steady enough to use it. Have the Lee 452-255 RF for practice, and will order the 300 from Accurate. Tag is in NM unit 34 -- essentially my back yard.

Re: Good thoughts appreciated. Update.
As to that catheter removal the staff are being lazy. When removing a catheter the nurse should withdraw as much saline fluid as possible with the syringe then take a clean gauze pad and using bandage scissors cut the one way valve from the catheter. Then holding the opened lumen of the catheter (only has saline in it no pee, as this is the lumen to blow up the tip for retention in the bladder) slowly withdraw catheter and since there is no valve no pressure and no inflation of the tip. Easy peasey and NO pain whatsoever. I learned this as a young Nurse experienced it when I had bladder cancer. Arrrgh.
Glad you are doing well Bill. Pain management like mentioned above.

Nobody listens to me. I found that catheter lesson to have much more meaning to me than the “girls.”
I did teach my physicians assistant at my oncologist and she kept telling me how much better people liked my way. DUH.
But I am just a dumb nurse.

Re: Good thoughts appreciated. Update.
Each and every person at levels below the CEO is necessary. Do you want the Doctor or the Nurse to mop the floor? I don't. Everyone needs to do their job, and not have to do someone else's job.
Glad things are going well. A little bit of discomfort to remind you to let things heal is acceptable. Physical therapy may cause the pain level to temporarily go up, but they know what they are doing. Follow their advice.
