Very nice ! Only 44-40’s ever in my accumulation were an Marlin 1894CB 24” checkered I got NIB from a dealer in Oregon or Washington and an Marlin 1894CCL (think I got that one from someone here or on castboolits) I believe it was called , pretty much the same as the CB except 20” and if memory serves uncheckered . I shot them both with cast only and they were good as far as I wanted to shoot . Always wanted to add an original Marlin 1894 44-40 of pre 1920 vintage but never found one for what I thought was a fair price . Had originals in 25-20 , 32-20 and 38-40 but the 44-40 just seemed harder to come by .

Very nice guns & some fine shooting!
Have a Marlin 1894 S in 44-40 it will cut holes at 60 yd, with a scope on it from 200 - 245 gr. cast bullets
with out the scope its about 3 - 4 in. group
I thinking a man could still get it done with any of those! Looks like a good time and good shooting. I have a 38 wcf that is a fine shooter even with a frosted bore.

Before I bought the Marlin 1894 38-40 I had I pondered buying a Marlin 1889 38-40 in the Poconos of PA . Guy at the shop said he was selling it for an older fellow who had given up hunting and supposedly the old boy had taken a deer each year for something like thirty years with the kinda weak factory loads . Think there was a box or two of ammo that looked to have been purchased in the 60’s judging by the boxes . The old gun was still functional when I looked at it but the entire metal exterior had fine reddish orange rust although the bore was bright shiney and oiled . Dunno why some of that precious oil never found the exterior metal

Nice batch of 44-40's -- he must be real fond of that cartridge. I also am somewhat of a fan, have a couple of the Rossis. One in regular 44-40, the other in 44 mag that I load with 44-40 level loads but get to use carbide dies.

The 44-40 is a great round, but not as well recognized, but still my favorite is the 38-40. I have a bunch in all sorts of rifles, Marlin, Whitney Kennedy, Whitney Phoenix, Colt and Burgess and like them all...
I agree! I only have 3 44's and I have to do something different with all of them. I have 7 38's and can shoot the same load in all of them.
The 38 was WAY more popular in my locale. Contrary to everywhere else.
Beautiful rifles, sir!
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
