45 Colt leverguns
The Winchester 73 & 92 thread got me wondering if I was right about 45 Colt lever guns not being made until the 1980's...
I guess that's right...

Re: 45 Colt leverguns
It always irks me that people say leverguns were made in handgun calibers when really it was handguns were made in rifle calibers.
Leveraction rifles are now found in handgun calibers but not so much in the 19th century.
I had this augument with a club official who wrongly stated that lever action rifles in handgun calibers were to be banned in the UK , so I said, well the 44/40 will be ok then? no, he said that's a handgun calibers....

Thanks AJ. I have read that article before. I have had both Winchester and Rossi .45 Colts. Cowboy Tutt gave me some loads that are bottom end 45-70 with some custom 360 gr. Keith bullets.

Re: 45 Colt leverguns
The 45 is my favorite caliber. I have several Lever Guns in .45 although not historically accurate. Maybe if I would have started with the 44-40 I would have most of my guns in that cartridge but I had a few .45 revolvers so I got the lever guns to match so I could reload for just the single round.
Re: 45 Colt leverguns
As a general statement the idea of putting a handgun caliber cartridge into a shoulder fired, long gun didn't really gain traction until the advent of the sub machinegun in WW1 if you think about it.
And those were really the outgrowth of the of handguns like the C96 Mauser or snail drum luger that had long barrels and were outfitted with shoulder stocks similar to some revolvers a generation earlier but those were definitely handguns, with the option of a shoulder stock.
But a rifle/carbine built from the get go in a pistol cartridge sort flew in the face of conventional wisdom 120 or so years ago. They would have asked themselves why would you not use a rifle cartridge in a rifle? Why would you settle for the lower powered pistol cartridge when the platform was clearly capable of more.
Of course as you said handgun cartridges were defined differently back then …… 38 WCF, 44 WCF were rifle cartridges.

My grandson Jerry 3 has a Winchester 94 AE in >45 Colt that has some real heavy loads for it, a real fine shooting 16 inch carbine.

Re: 45 Colt leverguns
I am lucky enough to have two .45 LC lever guns, an old Rossi and a Newer Henry Carbine. I like the Rossi more than the Henry due to weight. Both are accurate enough and handle the heavier loads and red dot sights to carry around the mountains when I am running the dog in case of critters.
