Drugs, temperate weather (mostly), very generous welfare, and Socialist "leadership" that believes that being tough is inhumane. We have this discussion in the Politics Section all the time. THIS is what happens when the war on drugs is NOT prosecuted. And, it's not just Seattle...any big city along the I-5 from Canada to San Diego is blighted like this to one extent or the other.

Back in the day that was a big deal and the constable would send him on his way, perhaps it is the hostels and soup kitchens that now encourage homeless people to take the lazy option. I know that some homeless people do need help but the crackheads etc can all OD for all I care.

I couldn't watch the whole show but I'll bet the mayor and the council don't live in the city and they are all getting rich from some federal or state programs that they are bleeding dry . a shame what's happening.....

seattle city council just voted to uproot and destroy a bunch of neighborhoods and replace with high rise high dollar condos and apartments, with the option to pay the city a mitigation fee if the builders don't include "low income housing" in the high rise. so the city is going to evict homeowners, steal their land, let developers replace those houses with units the displaced cannot afford to live in, pay a kickback to the city, and no one can figure out why seattle is dying.

At 1 hour, it's a long doco, but it was worth watching.

I'm inclined to think the homeless attract the soup kitchens, along with all the other "do-gooder" programs. All those programs attract funding, whether by government or by well meaning but misguided philanthropists. You get a few homeless, and they attract a soup kitchen, which then attracts more homeless, and then the cycle becomes self perpetuating. (and yes, I'm aware I'm calling them homeless, rather than the correct definition. It's simply easier to use one word rather than " drug affected, possibly mentally deficient, possibly criminal human effluent" ). Waiting for all those thousands of crackheads to OD is what is causing the problem. If you could get them all to OD tonight the problem would be solved by tomorrow. That is not going to work.

The Rhode Island solution to the criminal issue discussed in the doco sounds like a good start, but I don't see how it will solve the problem of thousands of druggies and other mentally ill people, who only commit misdemeanor crimes which won't get them locked up long enough for the program to become entrenched in their way of life. Among other things, the high cost of locking them all up would be economically unworkable. Seattle obviously hasn't got the answer yet. Singapore in the middle of last century was almost 1/3 slum and they turned it around, but they didn't have the drug problem to deal with. I don't know if that's because they have no qualms about executing drug dealers or because seriously life destroying drugs just weren't as prevalent back then.

If anyone has got an example of a city which had all the elements of the Seattle problem and then turned it around with a workable solution, I'd like to hear about it. Bearing in mind, draconian measures which our modern western society would find unacceptable cannot be used, so any solutions from China, North Korea, etc, are off the table.

I have grave concerns politicians dont even run the country anymore. I think bankers have been pulling strings since WW2 but they needed the hard case generation to die out to start making overt moves with this craziness. Turn everyone into irrresponsible jellyfishes.

The American north West Coast has gone down hill since I travelled there on business back in the 80s. This is also true of Canada where the BC Government was a customer of mine. Sad to see the former beauty degraded (for whatever reason).
Silicon Valley and San Francisco were once great places to visit and to do business, and I travelled there often, but SF if of no interest any more. The SF that I knew and enjoyed no longer exists.

I made my first trip to Seattle -- other than just passing through SEA-TAC on my way to Alaska one time -- and found many unique and attractive things about the city. The terrain, the great diversity of people-food-music, the friendly attitude to strangers I encountered in most places -- all were things that could draw me back.

But one experience will make me think twice about going back. One morning I had to go downtown for a court appearance related to my late sister-in-law's estate. I parked in a commercial lot a block away from the court house and walked from there, and on the way to and from I will bet you I was approached by 25 "unfortunates", all with the same line -- "Hey buddy, have you got $20 to spare?" I've traveled all over North America, England, western Europe, and I have encountered plenty of panhandlers, but never, ever so many, so aggressive, and so blatantly demanding of a specific amount of money.

Several friends have asked me if I would recommend Seattle for a vacation, and I have -- but with the warning to be prepared to be hassled by bums like never before.

It's everywhere to some degree, but that's disgusting. I watched the whole thing and while the "solution" in R.I. seems to be helping I get the feeling that it's just putting perfume on a pig.

Watch Live PD a couple times and see how often the officers are using Narcan to stop ODs on the same people week after week. And these are often in "safe" areas. Maybe the officers should only use the Narcan to protect themselves from incidental contact with drugs in the performance of their duties.

It seems like there are a few homeless that are veterans who ran off the rails and and some families in crisis. They should be helped. There are probably also a small number of what we used to call hobos. Folks living the life they like. But the persistent drug users are the big problem. I hate to think the only solution is a Devil's Island sort of approach but right now that's looking pretty good. I get that they were all someone's kid and grandkid at one time, but they've made choices that have taken them outside the pale. If their families won't help them then why is it society's duty?

Here's another BOHICA they pulled on Seattle, King County, and Washington State citizens: They got about a billion in federal money to tear down the ViaDuct, and make that huge tunnel to replace it. NOW, after the ViaDuct is torn down there will be several new acres of Puget Sound waterfront property worth hundreds of millions of bucks and all the new money will flow into the socialist coffers.

it's all on the [ ]crats and social justice warriors, but it proves this scripture is true, "in the last days men shall wax worse and worse." Yup, check. American governments at all levels have stuck their thumbs in God's eye, (they imagine), by codifying what God prohibits, and now we are reaping the whirlwind. If a culture codifies ungodliness, it will happen.

I do not think there is a viable political solution, and I believe we are very close to the "time of Jacob's trouble".... as a lot of us do around this camp fire...

When I was in school back in the 70's the cry was "its my life and I can do what I want". Well now is now and The tax payers are supposed to clean up these peoples lives.
If the dopers won't put out the efforts to get clean, there is no solution.

This reminds me of when I testified before a City-County council meeting in Cincinnati in 1980 or so. The arrogance and disdain for the ordinary citizen of these political officials and bureaucrats is reminiscent of 80 years ago in Germany. These people need removed from office at the next election.
