Re: I Just Noticed a Great New Screening Feature On My Android Phone!!!!!!
So do you have to wait for a call to set it up? Or can you set it up ahead of time and have it ready? Right now I simply don't answer any numbers I don't recognize. I occasionally get a caller ID on my Android that says, "Possible Spam" but they are very infrequent.
This might be a feature of your local cell provider. I did a search in my "settings" and it found no matches.

And I am absolutely sure Google is not garnering a shred of info from your use of this app that they can sell so that it can turn around and bite you in the butt in some way you've never imagined. Right, sure...

Re: I Just Noticed a Great New Screening Feature On My Android Phone!!!!!!
Must depend on what make phone you have, my Samsung S9 only has 2 buttons. Lately I've taken to answering the spam calls , Hello then I wait for them to start talking and I start punching numbers until I hear CLICK- then I block the number.
I found a spam call blocker for my landline on Amazon, just answer the call if its spam just push the big red button and the number is blocked! Can also push #2 on the cordless phone to block.
Few weeks ago I got a call from the 'irs' in Texas, knowing it was fake I let the machine get it. Caller id gave me the number and the address by google- these nitwits were just a few blocks from the actual IRS OFFICE! So I called the real office told them about it and gave the lady the address. She told me they knew about it but couldn't track them down.

I still think the phone companies should hire a bunch of ex special forces types and travel to wherever the calls are coming from to eliminate the business owners. I really don't think it would take many such actions to have the desired effect. And heck the phone companies would be hiring vets. A win for everyone but the irritating callers.
Come to think of it I'd even pay a 5 cents a month charge to set it up. If everyone who owned a phone paid just 5 cents there'd be more than enough money to cover the cost.

same here. I don't answer if caller isn't my contacts. if they don't leave a message I block the number. if I don't like a message I block the number. I think CALL BLOCKING is the best thing since the other best thing..marlinman93 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 08, 2019 12:36 pm So do you have to wait for a call to set it up? Almost all of the scam calls I get are numbers that come from my area code and my prefix. If it's a number I don't know I don't answer it. If it come from someone I do business with they'll leave a message. If it's legit and they leave a message I'll call them back.

I do the exact same thing. No answer if I don't know the number, and block them if they wont leave a message.Grizz wrote: ↑Tue Jan 08, 2019 7:05 pmsame here. Re: I Just Noticed a Great New Screening Feature On My Android Phone!!!!!!
My cell phone has a similar feature. It's called a power button. When I want to make a call, I turn it on and delete any messages that have been left. When I complete my call, I turn it off again.

I prefer text messages for most conversations. Shorter than voice.

Re: I Just Noticed a Great New Screening Feature On My Android Phone!!!!!!
so, since texting is mentioned, there are two secure texting applications that I use. whisper signal, and whatsapp.
they provide SECURE ENCRYPTED comms between phones. you can make video calls. SECURE. group chats. SECURE. wi-fi telephone calls, SECURE. send files, photos, and videos, SECURE.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
We run all our chats in a VPN tunnel which encrypts the encrypted info running in the tunnel...SECURE... double encryption
Signal is the app that is most probably most secure.
I highly recommend either or both of these apps. Whatsapp is a bit more user-friendly, but it is owned by google. I think. but no matter, they can't undo double encryption, and neither can anyone else. so far.
One great benefit is we can circulate family photos around the globe knowing that they won't wind up on the dark web porno mills...

Huh... every phone has to have the app installed right, what happens when texting to a phone without the app?

Re: I Just Noticed a Great New Screening Feature On My Android Phone!!!!!!
I think Facebook owns WhatsApp now. Not positive.
But if so, I wouldn't put much faith in it being secure.
I does no good to block those spoofed numbers. They are not actually calling from there. They simply roll through the 10000 numbers of the prefix, because more people are likely to pick up if they think it's another cell phone calling.
I have well over 1000 contacts saved in my phone. If the call isn't from one of them, they had better leave a message if they need something. I won't answer an unknown.
Dang scammers have practically rendered our cellphones and landlines useless.

Re: I Just Noticed a Great New Screening Feature On My Android Phone!!!!!!
those apps are on both phones.. they do handshake and credential transfers before any data crosses the ether. if you are texting using the phone's built-in messaging software you are sending unsecure data in plain language over airwaves in a format that can be seen and read by anyone.
that fb owns whatsapp is true. BUT there are legions of people involved in encryption and testing those apps for vulnerabilities. when whatsapp becomes insecure it will be known and broadcast...
that said, the proposition with the vpn tunnel is that the data is not cached or recorded on the routers, it's a pass-through. that's how it is with PIA, the VPN I use, there is no hard copy and when the router/server sends the traffic, it is gone from the server but for the inherent latency. BUT, because it is encrypted it doesn't matter who sees it, all we can see is the hash.
the fact is that software is under constant attack, it will not be a secret when it is breeched.
if you are interested, download Kali Linux [https://www.kali.org/], install on DVD or thumb drive and boot a computer. You will be able to snoop the wifi that surrounds us and see it and read it. You will be able to snoop your own wifi connection and see if it's secure or not. You will be able to read your traffic and see insecure passwords flitting through the ether in plain language. You will even be able to do a "man in the middle" attack on yourself, or any other computer in radio range. It's a trivial thing. There is software in Kali that will break the average user password in a few seconds so you can log onto routers at will... penetration testing and computer penetration defense IS A GLOBAL INDUSTRY, and we at the bottom of the trough get these wonderful stealthing applications to cloak our vitals, if we wish to avail...
I am passing this info along in the hope that people will take cyber security seriously enough to do the simple and practical things, secure chat, secure email, and secure VPN, all simple to implement. these things have the effect of making us less visible to the rampant criminal misuse of the internet, such that the criminals will pass us by because they don't see any opportunity when all they see is the hashed data. [https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2] is a secure public penetration testing site that will analyze your computer for vulnerabilities. This is one of the good guys. You can get unbreakable passwords from his site if that interests you.
Anyway, many folks cannot or will not be bothered with all this bother, like the fellow who doesn't carry a firearm or doesn't have a fire extinguisher in his vehicle, and so they are wide open available to any and every cyber criminal in existence.
About blocking numbers. It does work, for me at least. It forces callers that have legitimate business to leave a message because I've blocked their phone from ringing mine. In recent calls tab I see the numbers I've blocked try to call in, but the phone doesn't ring.
IMO, all phones should be blacklisted, and only our contacts should be whitelisted. THAT is the app I'd like to see.
Best Regards,
Grizz

Re: I Just Noticed a Great New Screening Feature On My Android Phone!!!!!!
You're missing the point about blocking numbers.
If they were using real numbers, by all means block them.
But they are using numbers that are in use by other people. If you block thousands of numbers, you will eventually prevent someone from calling you that you actually want to hear from.
I just let it go to voicemail. Its 100% effective.
When I work nights and sleep days, I turn the landline off and put the cell on "Do not disturb". My wife is the only one who can make it ring. She can text and message without waking me, but a call rings through. She knows it had better be important

RE kali linux . . . just for giggles I dl'd the latest copy and rebooted this compluter with the live dvd... took a long time to load, but it has blazing fast internet connection and is a good version of linux to have even if you don't want to attack open routers!
as another plus... you can do online banking or shopping with the live os AND LEAVE NO TRACE, if that interests anyone . . .
