Last evening !
Last evening of the Virginia gun season . My sinus and the weather cooperated so I could see the season close . Brought along my new to me and unblooded Mannlicher Schoenauer circa 1956 MC 30-06 Carbine and in case a covey of deer come by close my also new to me but blooded circa 1988 Benelli Montefeltro . Shooting yuck factory in both . Weather is nice 52 degrees little wind and no precipitation . My rangefinder claims I’m 34-36 feet up , where I’ve been perched all season .

Re: Last evening !
I’ve hunted this tree from this height for about ten years now . All my climbers are pretty much either you have to make an effort to jump out or the tree falls for you to fall . Anyway at first I used the belt that came with each of my six climbers ( four TreeLounge and two Trophy Whitetails) and later I decided the belt wasn’t needed . Well about three years ago I dunno why I just decided I needed one of the safety vest things and I wear it religiously now . Nothing happened no slips falls etc but something in my subconscious I suppose got me thinking I needed it . You can see the strap attaching it to the tree and the strap going inside my coat to the vest itself .

Re: Last evening !
I’ll admit it’s a bit in the nose bleed section . This spot is kind of in a bowl so for me to be above their line of sight when they come in I need to be up in the rafters so to speak . But if I’m in the big woods and it’s flat I’ll still go up as high as I can . I have a couple Loc-Ons I rarely use anymore , I’d use a 16-20 foot tree ladder and about 10-20 screw in steps with them and they’d usually be up 30+ . I used to put out a couple ladder stands for friends that were generally 16’ I killed deer out of them but I honestly prefer more elevation .

Deciding to belt oneself in seems to come as we get older. I'm thinking that as we age we get a bit more appreciative of breathing.

Does that belt pull a rip cord on the chute if you fall?

Re: Last evening !
34 feet, that is way too low to pull the ripcord on your reserve. Feet and knees together and prepare to make the best PLF of your life. No feet-butt-back on this one if you ever want to walk right again. Think coming off the slam dunk and having the black hat be too small to handle your weight. Been there, done that. Sergeant Favor got hurt when she tried to hold onto the rope and I went out level then straight down. She couldn't go on the runs for a week, and I couldn't raise either hand or speak when two soldiers helped her to her feet and she came over to ask if I was injured. I saw double for 3 months after that. If you are going to use your reserve, do it at 500 feet. Pull the release on both sides of your main chute first or you will burn in.

And never step out of door of an HH-43B from about that height. When you wake up every thing is going to hurt. Until the morphine kicks in.
