Retirees, what gets you out of bed in the morning?

Post by Bill in Oregon »

I usually wake up well before dawn and can't wait to get the coffee going, but the thing that gets me up faster than any is a calf cramp!

500-1,000 mg of Magnesium with dinner usually prevents those ("check with your personal physician before taking any supplement{/i]"). Or the same effect can be had if you soak in epsom salts but it requires enough time for your skin to become permeable/absorbent, so a 40 minute soak, but it can really help.

Nothing gets me up.....I go to bed and get up when I damm well feel like it. After living 62 years by other people demands I decided that when I retire nobody is gonna tell me how to live. In the last year I missed half the matches at the gunclub because I just did not want to get up at 6.

In the last two years since retirement, I restructured my life to be compatible with my varying sleep habits with no thought as to other people's needs...except my wife :D ....but like me she too likes my sleep habits as she is well accustomed to doing what she does when she feels like it.

Bill, when I was drinking lots of beer, my calfs would make me up every night around 3 or 4. Quit drinking...no cramps.

Dinner at 6???? pelosi....I eat when I'm hungry...sometimes 6,,,sometimes 11....

Got up today at 12:45...got to bed somewhere around 2 or 3....don't remember and don't care.

People who know me will tell you it's near impossible to get ahold of me by phone.....

Don't believe that BS about "having purpose"....my purpose is to make sure my immediate family and furry friends are warm, live well and with a belly full of food. and.....they will get those things.....when I decide to get up. :D Count Sixula

I retired over 8 years ago, and I still can't sleep in. But once I'm up for the morning toilet break, I can't go back to sleep. Hot coffee calling, and since it's just my wife and I the quiet in the first couple hours is relaxing time of day. Always had to rush out when I was still working.

My job

I retired. Didn't work for about a year. Got caught up on my reading and did lots of hunting and traveling, but then remembered just how much I liked money. Ugh.
My "retirement" job has been keeping me pretty busy.
So far about 20% has gone to my 401k, and what doesn't go to taxes has been spend on guns and toys (tractors :D )
Now I just need time off to play with them.

Oh, and my bladder gets me up several times a night. My rotating shift keeps my clock so screwed up there is no telling when I'm gonna wake up. Sometimes 3am

Nothing gets me out of bed in the morning - early morning, that is.

My Green-eyed Monster & I started sleeping in when we retired 14 years ago, arising about 10AM (+/-).

Which is especially attractive on those cold/rainy/snowy Winter mornings...…….

It was pretty easy to break the habit of getting up early for work - in fact, it was a no-brainer.

I will only hunt in the afternoons during Fall, when it's usually much more comfortable.

A nearly-five-month-old, red-colored Rat Terrier keeps me from sleeping-in. Best alarm clock, at least until she gets a bit older, and may want to sleep-in, too. She came from a farm in Brazoria County; my goal being an alert traveling companion.

I slept in until 5 am this morning which is about 45 min behind most days. The 60 year old bladder is a treacherous thing. But I still hear my Grandfather yelling up the stairs to all of his grand children to get up, the suns almost up and you will miss the best part of the day! I do believe he was right!

Not retired, but a chihuahua and a black & white Rat Terrier get me up. Alarm clocks are too easy to hit the snooze button. The dogs know how to get you up with lots of enthusiasm on their part.

Yeah not retired until 2025(but it’s getting closer every day) but what gets me up? Winchester, Marlin, and Ruger! Winchester is a nearly 6 year old chocolate lab, Marlin is a year and a half mobile alarm system that looks suspiciously like a 115 pound Doberman, and Ruger is a 17 week old yellow lab that has stolen my heart and several layers of skin with puppy claws and a desire to be in bed with us.

I retired in 2001 after the last 24 years of rotating shift work. I like to get up and put the coffee on early and do some bible reading.

Retired 3 years ago. Did what I wanted and bought a motorcycle. Started substitute teaching and found I liked it, wife is a High School teacher. Offered me a full time job running their in school suspension class for students who get in trouble.

Rules are easy, NO PHONES, stay awake, sit at a desk and work. I am having fun. The students know my wife and I well from after school activities.

Go to the gym and beat my fat old body very other day.

Get up early because I don't want to waste time.

Thanks for all the replies, folks, serious and otherwise.

I'm looking at closing that door behind me next one to three years, depending on couple things.

Right now I could probably walk and not suffer too much financially, but while I dislike my job, I enjoy the work - that's what's keeping me around.

And I have to keep mindful if I stay at home and be underfoot, my wife may just shoot me. (grin)

Don't grin - IME, your relationship with your significant other WILL change after retirement, when you'll be with each other 24/7 (opposite of when one or both of you had to go to work)

HOW it will change is up to the both parties (IOW, YMMV)

I'm right at a month in and I can already see the wisdom of your routine.

I made the mistake of thinking I needed to "help" her with the grocery shopping. Not good.

Luckily reading is a large part of both of our lives and syncronized reading is pretty low impact. Already she doesn't say a word if I spend the morning reloading or the afternoon at the range so that's good. Plus I have several retired friends to play with.

We're going to try a month in FL in a one bedroom condo. That may be the real test.

Wife said I had to find something to do outside the house after 6 months. Said all I wanted to do when she got home was talk....been alone too much I guess.

So, I went to work at the school where she teaches, now I am with her 24/7.

We get along and it is nice to spent time with her.

As others have stated their case, my dog and cat get me up, too..
The cat, well before the crack of dawn, just to be obnoxious, I guess. Nothing like a big ol' furry tail in your face, to ruin a good dream.
Then, that wakes the dog up, who jumps up on the bed to sniff my face, and then flops down to sleep some more..
