Looking through one of those quickie news stories that pop up now and then, I was looking at some of the various actors from the '40s that were in the services. First time I'd seen a link to Audie Murphy's decorations. The list is staggering! Amazing feat for a guy that was all of 5'5"!

Maybe because he was so small saved his life with bullets flying all around. Who would want to be a 6.5 body builder with a head the size of a basketball standing on that tank, the way Audie did, behind the Ma Deuce? One brave M.F. I'll say.

I read where james arness was the first off the landing boat on D-day because he was so tall to see how deep the water was. Well, it sounds good anyway. I met him once. He looked even bigger than on film.

I watched that movie TO HELL AND BACK several times with my dad. I also in turn have watched it several time with my son. There are things in the book, if you take time to read it that aren't in the movie.
From his days as a kid rabbit hunting in Texas to feed his family Audie was used to taking snap shots at running rabbits. In the dense forests of Germany snap shot on German soldiers with the M1 Carbine were second nature to him.
I remember when his plane crashed. I was in Roanoke, Va several days after the crash visiting family. It was a sad time.

At first I thought this post was about "Mr. Murphy" of "Murphy's Law" fame! Happy it wasn't!!!
Audie Murphy was the inspiration for Captain Dustine Edward Mardsen Fog, "Dusty", the primary character of J.T. Edson's "Floating Outfit" western series (as well as his "Civil War" series). The "Ysabel Kid" (pronounced "sable"; the "Y" is silent), his friend, is where I get my nom de guerre here (and elsewhere).
I also enjoyed the movie "To Hell and Back". I really enjoyed the book!!!

A .45 Colt New Frontier I once owned that Audie bought new in 1965 along with a consecutively numbered mate. The mate to it is in George Gartons book "Post War Colt SAA`s". A sad story, I lost it and many more in a divorce. The serial # on this one is 5355 NF.
