This photo shows me and a dandy buck taken within the Black Hills before antler restrictions were enacted. I located the buck with my binoculars and made a long stalk in rough country to get into 30-30 range. Distance was about 125 yards. At the shot, the buck bounded away but toppled over after a few jumps. We prefer hunting in western South Dakota over other states because of the easy access to vast public lands and the excellent game populations there. My buddies always whine about me taking the Winchester on my western hunts. "You should buy a 270", they say. But this angle-eject carbine has never let me down and stalking within good shooting distance is half the fun. I feel that it is a myth that only long shots are possible for western hunts. 30-30 is a keeper!

Great deer!
But long shots aren't a myth in some Western areas! If it's a wooded area the shots may never be long. But in some areas I hunt out West I can't find a tree to sit under withing 10 miles!
I have a .270 and a .30-30, and both do their jobs as well now as those calibers did when they were new. It is no surprise to me that the .30-30 works.

No matter how open the ground, you can find bowhunters filling tags in western states. I never have and never will believe short rifle shots aren't possible. And I live in a wide open central North Dakota prairie.
I live in the desert in WA, no trees for miles and I agree long shots are for the most part a myth. I've crawled for hours before to get up close to deer and other times just sat real still until they moved toward me. I was going to say I could see longer shots in the planes states but the above post sort of shot a hole in that theory.
