New to me hybrid B 86 .45-90

Post by 1886 »

This is the rifle I first mentioned two weeks ago. It is a B 86 SRC fitted with a 26" oct. barrel chambered for the .45-90. The rifle wears a rifle type forearm. I installed a Marbles tang sight. Front and rear sights are also Marbles. Wood is hand checkered. All together a sharp package. I am going to send the rifle to Mic Mac. for a little smoothing. The rifle will not accept full length, 2.80", chartridges into the mag. tube. It will accept 2.70" cartridges. Feeding is fine if the rifle is held horizontal but will bind a little if held verticle. I am sure Mic can smooth it up. Thanks for looking.

beautiful gun and great photos! way back in the old days winchester would put the gun together anyway you wanted, so you actually could have ordered a saddle ring rifle with carbine butt, if you so desired. i have seen some really unusual originals that way. looks like a great rifle/carbine!

Looks like nice work.

Do you know what became of the original barrel and magazine tube?

Really nice looking carbine. Tell me how it works with full house loads. I suspect you won't be shooting many of those, at least not at one time.

I've got to get to developing some rounds for my Winnie 45-90. Want to make up both white and black.

Who is Mic Mac?

Congrats on a very fine rifle. Possibly Mic can also address the feeding and full cycling of the standard length .45-90 cartridge so that you will not have to trim cases to make them cycle for you..
Please let us know.

BTW, couple weekends ago, Ricky, 86er, and I ran some of my initial mid speed reloads (good plinking loads) through my Japchester .45-90, shooting offhand at 50 yards. These were 325 gr cast Beartooth bullets over nearly 40 grains of 5744 and they shot well with no discernable recoil. Ricky put all his into the black in a nice small group, despite a gusty breeze. :D That 9.5 pound rifle damps out a lot of side wind movement as well as recoil.

I also shot up some of 86er's extra 430 grain factory .45-70 loads  (they were either BB or Garrett, do not remember) and put my first two within one inch of each other before I got sloppy and had a flyer. These had a firm kick, but no problem for the hunter trying to put down something big and nasty. THey were similar to the 500 gr .45-90 sharps loads we had begun the day shooting. These are too long to cycle through, but can be loaded singly into an open action. Gotta shoot them though, as the tip will bind if you try to work the lever to eject them; awful problem, eh?
:)
This kind of shooting is really fun and now that my 1892 .357 is working again, I plan to do more of it.

I am confident that Mic can address the loading and feeding issues associated with the full length, 2.80", cartridge. Will advise. 1886.

I am bumping in an effort to promote smithing work for Mic. If you have a levergun project in mind visit his web page at the leveraction gunsmith page of this fine site. Super guy. Thanks. 1886.
