Blowing off a little steam
Been a while since we ran the logging loco we made so blew the dust off and fired her up.

How long does it take to get running from a cold start? Todd
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Re: Blowing off a little steam
I think sometimes folks get a bit confused regarding "simpler times". A steam locomotive is one complicated son of a gun. It required multiple folks to operate it and a bunch more to maintain it. It required knowledge of the mechanics of it's operation, water chemistry, boiler operation, and how to keep the darned thing on very thin rails.
Just think, today even with computer controlled trains that are run on tracks that are computer monitored and with the most uptodate communications, and they still run into one another. With nothing more that (sometimes) telegraph messages, oil fired signal lamps and a human being to physically move switches and so on. Nothing simple about that whatsoever.

Re: Blowing off a little steam
The "times" were simple, not necessarily the equipment.
And, a lot of today's machines are simple to operate, but not necessarily simple in their design. Get an electrical or electronic gremlin and you will need that "team" or thousands of dollars in scanners and analyzers to get it running.

Re: Blowing off a little steam
Good to see your steam engine in action again, Pitch. Reminds me I have most of the parts for one here somewhere.

if pitchy had worked for edison, he would have used tungsten filament inside a vacuum bulb the first time, not 4000+
had pitchy been a chemist, it would been formula 408 and wd-39......
