Post by Pitchy »

Yesterday and today about the same time we heard a loud noise that would come and go, today i spotted the source a jet fighter .
It was flying in a big circle over us, we live in the country so i don` t understand what or why it was doing it
Its hard to believe he was doing training exercises, wonder whats going on. :?

I was trained from childhood to make a mad dash out of the house in the desperate hope of seeing any aircraft that passed over. In fact, my brothers and I would sometimes do the Three Stooges thing of all trying to squeeze through the door at once, Dad already having led the way. I think neighbors would sigh and mutter, "Those crazy Powells ..."

Well, Pitch, I have F-16s from Holloman AFB buzzing back and forth several times a day here. Heaven!

Folks living around airbases have complained about the noise since the first airplane took to the sky. Yet every darned one of them that complained was able to because of those airplanes.

Personally, I like to hear warbirds, new or vintage (though I do lean to the vintage) are a welcome sound. The last fun one was a couple of F-35's doing flyovers of the USS Iowa for Fleet Week in L.A. Harbor.

The sound of freedom!
I work on what was Dow AFB years ago. The Air Guard is still there and it's now a commercial airport. Even still, it's the longest airfield this far east in the country. I've seen some cool stuff come and go, especially working nights. Even lots of foreign stuff that come over for training.
Our camp was up in the boonies and high up. One time, we heard a racket and went on the porch. There were 2 F16's playing around dogfighting. At one point we were looking DOWN on them. It was very impressive.

I was out hunting deer by myself on a ranch south of Wichita Falls, Texas when two F4s making a supersonic low pass suddenly appeared in front of me - not a noise until they passed - then BOOM!!! Deer jumped from three different clumps of cover!

It made me wonder how an enemy target would feel just before the napalm hit !

The gun club I frequent sits in a valley. Up on top of the hill is a microwave/cell tower that the air guard uses as a practice strafing target. There used to be lots of A10s and F16s zooming past.
Many years ago at Quantico Marine Base the Marine A team would all be dangling from ropes below a Chinook helo in full battle gear. That was a sight to see.
I'm not far from Mr Trumps golf course and every so often an F35,16 or 22 will go over head as they intercept a small plane that has strayed into the NO FLY ZONE.

We get F-15's flying over fairly often. Almost always in pairs, but occasionally 2 or 3 pairs. On rare occasion a single jet, but that's very unusual. I love seeing them, and hearing them roar over.

Us old airedales that were around when the Phantom was in its prime will never forget that whine and black smoke. The heat waves off the runway after a flight of four took off with their afterburners scorching the concrete is something I can see if I just close my eyes.

Here's one that ended up as a Plane on a Stick. Interestingly it once did its best to kill me and several others when a brake and tire blew. The rubber went right through the window of our O11-B as we tried to see just how small we could make ourselves.

Cool picture and story pard, i went on a high speed taxi check on weekend duty once, we sat at the end of the runway with the brakes on and in after burner then away we went.
Then he pulled the drag chute and the nose of the plane started going left and right and that`s when i chit my pants thought sure we were dead.
Had a tire blow while towing one to the hanger once put a buddy in the hospital and had a idiot launch himself out of one in the hanger.
Lost a couple at the firing range from pilot fixation too. :(

There is an AFB up north from where my cabin is. They used to run training missions and simulate a bombing run on the dam on the lake. A few years ago I was there when two A-10 Warthogs suddenly made their presence known. They flew real low over the lake within 300 yards of my cabin headed towards the dam. By the time you heard them it was almost too late to see them. The sound was deafening, and very, very, cool.
