Looky what followed me home! (gratuitous dog pic)

Post by AmBraCol »

biscuit-blackie-browning.jpg

Dropped by our vets today to ask if they had a line on a young adult medium sized spayed bitch to adopt. Had no idea they had one in inventory. It also didn't strike me at first that she's a longer haired version of Blackie! The new one's name is Browning, she'll be taking over the duties abandoned by Pietro Beretta as the gun club caretaker's companion and (hopefully) watch dog. Pietro decided he was a traveling dog and mosied on out of the place. I figure a spayed bitch is more likely to be a stable citizen and to take over duties as the canine caretaker.

Nice. IME females tend to be more “homebound” than males. Are you stateside now yet still in Peru? Todd

That's my experience, too.

Nope, we're still almost two weeks away from travel. A fortnight hence we should wake up in RI. Weird thought, that.

I hope she turns out to be as good of a dog as our Boxer/German Shepherd mix rescue dog was. We all still miss her. Rescue dogs can be some of the best dogs you will ever have the privilege of knowing.

Thanks, guys. Browning has fit well into the family so far. But no, my wife won't budge on adding her permanent like. She's not house broke, but I think she's learned already. One puddle and a scolding followed by showing here where it IS OK to go seems to have done the trick. The example given by Biscuit and Blackie helps, of course. She's a smart girl. This morning as I let my wife out Browning joined the girls on the stairs where they have to wait while we get vehicles out. I kept an eye on her as if she bolts I'm not sure how we'd recover her as she's not learned basic commands well yet. But she stood there steady and behaved admirably. She's got a bit of rivalry going with Biscuit over who's the head honcho. Biscuit's mostly keeping her place, through persistence. Gotta love properly raised pittbull/cross canines. She's as sweet as she can be, even when Browning rudely bares her teeth. She just seems to say "We don't do that here. Let's be friends!" Browning is making up for lost time in ear rubs and we've got to watch her at meal times as she wants to over eat. It's been quite an interesting 20 hours since she joined us! It'll be interesting to see how the girls handle it when I haul her off and they won't see her for a few months.

The first 24 hours are history. She fit in pretty good. Not house broke, but only one accident so far. She IS however, a destructive little thing. Killed a sheet last night and my sheepskin rug tonight. Just like with kids, if it's quite - check. Oh well, she's getting along pretty well with the girls and eating like there's no tomorrow. I gave her a near double portion tonight and she scarfed it all down. Saturday she gets to "go home". We'll see how that works out.

Here they are, lined up for a snack. Browning is catching on quick, and loves to get her ears scratched. I'll miss her when she's gone. Don't tell my wife.

I've long believed that scratching a dog's ears is a "healing balm" for the human. I just know my blood pressure goes down ... 8)

All lined up waiting patiently for their treat...we love it here.......

Reminds me of happier days when we had 14 yorkies......down to four.......anyway, one time the animal psychologist (my wife) pointed out to me......"look at the dogs when I put down this water bowl". They lined up behind each other waiting their turn at the bowl.----6

Well, today was the day. Loaded up the car and headed to the gun club. Left Biscuit and Blackie up on our flat roof (their "back yard") and put Browning in the vehicle. Got out there, she rode well, and took her out on a leash. She'd been a good girl around the house so I removed the leash about five minutes later - and off she went! Went down range at the trap/skeet setup and took a dump, wouldn't come when I called her. Then moved further on out (no one there but the caretaker and myself, so no danger from shot), under the fence and into the area where they're grazing some cattle. I figured they'd scare the city pup back, but she decided to try herding a bit. As I called her and followed her she kept moving on, left the cows along and moved west across the property. Finally I got her to come to me and onto the leash she went. Crazy pup. Back to the trap/skeet field and met a prospective member who'd just arrived. We chatted a bit and a new member showed up for orientation. Chatted some more and she was fine on the least. Left her with the caretaker (her new best friend as he'll be the one in charge of her from now on) and we went down to the pistol/carbine range to work out the airguns a bit. We went back up to sign out and when she saw me she started whining. Crazy pup's going to leave a hole here at the home place! But I'm sure she'll adapt quickly to her new home. Don't know if I'll get a chance to see her before Christmas or not!

Paul, I consider it a privilege to pray for dogs as the purest reflection of unconditional love, and hope that this girl "sabés the situation" and cleaves to her new human.

Just a quick update on Browning the gun club dog...

I chatted with Santiago the other day and he told me about his first encounter with the new denizen of the club. He arrived at the club, went through the gate up by the club house, parked and started toward the trap field. Javier, the care taker, was somewhere over there weed whacking. As Santiago got near the trap field, Browning saw him, started in his direction and when she identified him as a stranger she started barking at him. Javier saw him and started over, Santiago squatted down and tried to coax her over to him - but she was having none of it. She kept moving back and forth between Santiago and Javier, barking as if to say, "There's a stranger over here!" and it wasn't until Javier came up and presented them that she settled down - even to the point of playing with Santiago later.

So, she appears to be fitting in quite well and doing her job as well. It'll be a few months before I can get pics up and such as we're heading north on "Home Service" in a few hours. Thanks to all for your interest in this little waif who found a home.
