Mounts for scoping a Super Blackhawk

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Guys, I am thinking of putting together another one of these in .44 magnum. The last time I did this, I used the Leupold base that requires drilling and tapping two holes in the top strap. That's a rock-solid setup. I see now that both Weaver and Weigand have no-drill mounts for the SBH. Has anyone used either of these systems, and if so, what did you think? I was looking at mounting a Weaver 2X28 handgun scope, but Weigand also makes a "mini" no-drill version for mounting red dot sights. My eyes are just getting too sketchy for accurate use of iron sights in the field, so I'll need the help of one or the other system.

Go for it, Bill !

It was a LONG time ago (1975 ?) when I scoped a SBH with the Leupold Dual Dovetail base/rings setup, but I don't remember having to D/T the SBH for the base - IIRC, it used the factory rear sight holes.

(The SBH was a 1961 Old Model)

These days, I prefer a reflex sight to a scope on handguns (and some rifles). YMMV, though.

Seems like when we finally have a little extra of time to devote to our hobbies, our bodies start letting us down. I think I'm going to start letting some of my shooters go and use the funds to outfit some others with sights I can use. :(

Pete, I know I had to have a smith D&T my last SBH, but it was much newer than 1961 -- probably late 1980s or so. I may go with the smaller, lighter reflex sight, as well, maybe a 3MOA Burris Fastfire II or some such.
Blaine, I think your plan is a good one. We should do what we can to be able to enjoy what we have in the time allotted to us.

Just for the heck of it I looked on amazon. This says no drill/ tap. And it's only 40 bucks ...

Gunny, that's one of the mounts I was looking at.
Here are Weigand's offerings, for full size scope and a smaller one for a reflex sight.

Bill,
Check with Piller on this forum as he bought my scoped Super Blackhawk a few years ago.

I like that small mount. Might have to think about that for my BH .41.

Yes, and it is still solid and dead on the target accurate. The mounts are as tight as ever.

Piller,
Good to hear the rig still a solid and accurate shooter.
My older brother put it together for hunting deer in LA woods and also paper punching and when the hunting action was slow , we would blow turtles out of a stock tank with it. It would have been cool to shoot those flying turtles in the air with a shotgun like hitting pieces of broken (but not powdered) clays.
