I received this in an email, and thought it worth sharing.

Re: What would John Moses Browning say?
I doubt he'd be surprised since Hathcock did the same thing 50 years ago in Vietnam. The Browning .50 is an amazing machine. I'm glad I got the opportunities to shoot the ones that I did.
Re: What would John Moses Browning say?
I'd say John would say the sniper got very lucky.

I have fired one in training once. That is still an impressive piece of weaponry even if it is twice my age.

I wish I could remember where but sometime decades ago in the dark ages I read an article about JMB and the M2. It said that when the army put out a request for a heavy machine gun after seeing that such a thing could be useful with the advent of armored vehicles during WW1. Ole John Moses presented them with a working prototype in something like 3 weeks. He just scaled up the 1919 and it's 30.06 cartridge to accommodate the 50 cal desired and sicked his resident machinists and ammo makers on it and the rest is history. Could have been a bunch of hooey but I read this back before Al Gore invented the internet.

Yes, he did a pretty good job with that one!

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

I can't help but wonder why a special forces sniper would choose to use the Browning machine gun equipped with a "special sight" when they have all the exotic equipment and guns in their arsenal? Seems like he'd be handicapping himself, or just doing it to set some record with that gun?

My first thought on reading the title was exactly what others have said. Heck, Carlos did that years ago. But the youngsters of today probably think they invented something new.
One though did occur. The Brit did it with modern optics specially made for the job. I strongly suspect Carlos did it with something he cobbled together in the field. A bit of a difference there.

Re: What would John Moses Browning say?
It might have been a "here, hold my beer" moment, but can you imagine the intimidation factor at the other end of the field when the C.O suddenly flies apart right before their eyes

If I remember right Hathcock used the same Redfield 3-9 that he used on his bolt action rig. Yes the mount was cobbled together.
As for the remaining bad guys the sniper should have sent a nice long burst their way after Achmed came apart at the seams!
I remember seeing a movie about JMB, I believe that he developed the BAR in something like 72 or 96 hours and showing up at Army trials and winning the contract.

Re: What would John Moses Browning say?
As my hero Donald Trump would say, "Fake News". Marlinman said it right. Unless it was dire straits ....and in that case, the insurgents would have gotten a 200 round belt full......It don't make sense. One shot with an ill sighted gun with a 10 pound trigger pull when there's better choices laying around. How did they know that the hit took off his arm and shoulders?
I heard that insurgents that are hit good in the upper parts of the body all have extreme dandruff because that's all they found was their head and shoulders. ---6

Re: What would John Moses Browning say?
The only "...here, hold my beer..." moment in this story is when the machine-gunner sez to his mate... "listen... we're going to tell the press guy that what 'appened is..."

Because you don't always have the nice toys in all the places you need them.
This is an SBS British Barret we had to qualify with before going somewhere else. They required me to qualify on every weapon the team would be carrying.

Re: What would John Moses Browning say?
Seems the sniper had the time to adapt a good scope to the .50BMG. Then had time to OK the shot with higher command too. Not sure why he'd be in a situation where he was a qualified sniper, and not also have the correct equipment?
