Prayer Request - Update 8/1/18

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Guys, I know I hit this well quite a bit here, but I have always found this group's power of prayer to be mighty strong.

My extended family got shocking news on Friday. My cousin, who had previously beaten breast cancer, has been fighting stage 4 cancer for a year now. No one but her sister knew. We all just found out when she was just hospitalized and it is not looking good. She's a year and a half younger than I am - and way too young to be facing this.

I'd appreciate any prayers you can spare for her, her two children, her siblings and her Mom. Life isn't supposed to be fair, and I know everything fits into God's plan, but I gotta say this just bites.

Thank you fellas...

Done. Prayers for all the family too.

Family should read up on reducing the risk of breast cancer with:

Avoiding synthetic hormones (birth control pills, Mirena, depo-Provera, Implanon, NuvaRing etc - all the things gynecologists love to use on young women)

Supplementing with decent doses of iodine.

Menopausal women avoiding medroxyprogesterone and instead using real progesterone no matter whether they still have a uterus or not.

Also, I've seen some real turn-arounds using liposomal vitamin C along with conventional treatment.

Obviously, each person is different, as is each cancer, and if you ask six physicians a medical question, you get seven answers, so consult with your own physician(s), and do your own reading as well.

Prayers up.

For the rest of the family, self checks to feel for any lumps no matter how small would be a good idea. Men can get breast cancer, too. Men should check themselves for lumps around the nipples, and in the groin/testicle area. Once you know that cancer runs in the family, do not hesitate to check yourself. Have a good Doctor check you at least once a year. There are many types of cancers, and some grow slow, and some grow scary fast. Do NOT let cancer get a good start or you will be headed for terminal velocity.

Stages of cancer are important, as well as grades. Grade 1 still looks real similar to the original tissue and is easier to kill. Grade 4 does not even look human. It is the wild uncontrolled stuff which looks as scary as anything a Hollywood special effects department can come up with. It is hard to eradicate even when at stage 1. Grades 2 and 3 are in there as well. Always ask about the grade as well as the stage. The grade gives you a lot of information as to whether it is likely to spread or grow fast.

I spent some time working with a couple of Oncologists. They couldn't teach me as much as they knew, mostly because what they knew took a bunch of years to learn. I only had a limited time with them, and it was while I was a student. They treated me the same as their residents. My grade depended on getting up to speed with the residents. In 6 weeks, I probably learned as much as I did in a year of doing anything else. The Head of the Department offered me immediate acceptance if I would take the MCAT and apply there for Oncology. I couldn't do it. In 6 weeks I had seen enough to know that I didn't have the ability to turn it off at home so that I could sleep. I had nightmares for the only time of my life over a couple of patients who died despite everyone's best efforts. The ones we saved didn't make up for the losses. I couldn't accept the losses.

Update - I appreciate all your prayers fellas. My cousin went home to our Lord this afternoon. Her mortal suffering is over. I continue to pray for her kids (16 & 20), siblings, and especially her Mom. No parent should ever have to bury a child...

Pillee said "I had nightmares for the only time of my life over a couple of patients who died despite everyone's best efforts. The ones we saved didn't make up for the losses. I couldn't accept the losses;" I am realizing that with the average lifespan 80 years and a primary medicine career 40 years, roughly half my patients will die while under my care. You never get far from death, and it never quits hurting to see those you care for pass. At least most are older and have lived full lives, unlike this young lady - those are the ones I still lose sleep over, years later. You wonder so many 'what-ifs'....

Your relatives should get real on-board self-checking, regardless of 'BRCA' status; I've had geneticists reassure a patient who had 3 of 4 sisters, her mother, 2 of 3 aunts, a grandmother, and a great aunt that "breast cancer doesn't run in your family"...

Most women forget to do self-exam, and often do it wrong; most doctors for whatever reason don't even teach it right. :| I'd post instructions but they are so darned long and I use visuals; other docs need to just do their job....!

Prayers up for you all as you lay her to rest.
